The used toon (fixer-upper) I bought for pleasure use, came with a low hour, Merc 50, 2003 that some folks might consider an antique. Not exactly the motor I would have prefered but, it is a Merc and I know they're good on gas and reliability.

I heard that I can get another 10hp out of it by reprogramming the ECU and removing the restrictor in the throttle body. I was told that there was a company in Grand Rapids, MI that does/did this but, I can't local any information about them.

I also understand that (pretty much) no one here in the US is allowed to reprogram the ECU for legal reasons but, what if I just buy a 60hp ECU (used) and plug it in?

So, asking the experts on the subject, which ECU should I be looking for to accomplish my goal? If I can find the right part number, that would be perfect or if any of you have one for sale, LMK.

The motor is a 2003, 50ELPTEFI. Serial OT730xxx

TIA,
J.R.

Add a 3rd pontoon, you'll gain 30% more speed without touching the motor.

Finding a matching/compatible log for this vintage toon just isn't in the cards.

However, the ECU (ECM) part number on this motor, 88452112, shows that it also applies to the 60hp motor in the Mercury parts fiche.

So, it seems to me that all I MIGHT have to do is remove the restrictor plate from the throttle body.

Sound reasonable to all the techs here?

I had hoped to get some sort of support or direction from the membership but, no joy. Probably since it's ONLY a 50hp and it's not popular here.
I decided since I'm flying solo, to purchase a used 60hp ECM, rather than find a place that does programming. The folks that I bought it from gave me a money back guarantee if the ECM throws a code or won't work with my motor.

I won't be able to try it for a month or so until the warmer weather arrives to connect it up and give it a try.

I'll update this thread with my results then.
