I purchased a supposedly rebuilt '91 200 Mercury Offshore-after a couple hours running time it began to make a tapping noise. Not firing so we pulled head-water in cylinder and some scoring. Pulled powerhead and find that the bottom of the crank is smaller than the seal & consequently is not sealing. Is there a wear ring or bushing that is missing, or did someone really mess up the crank? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, is there a seal that goes in the mid plate??

I have an old seal that appears to go in the mid plate, I tried to re-install this into the midplate, but it didn't want to go.

It fits the drive shaft nicely, but wouldn't go into the midplate.

None of the other setups I have run in the past have ever had one, is this a normal set up, or what??

In the bottom end cap are 2 seals. The lips of both face down. Same as used on everything for years. Should be a tight fit on the end of the crank.

Gotcha there, but what about a seal being in the mid plate?

If you mean the adaptor plate that sits on top of the drive shaft housing right under the powerhead? No there isn't one, Just the two in the lower end cap.

Is the stainless steel skirt at the bottom of the shaft missing? I'm not sure this one is supposed to have it. But, if it's supposed to be there and it's not then the entire motor will go together just fine with the drive shaft engaging the crank, but no seal to keep water out of the spline and no surface for the two bottom end seals to work against! Suggest you take a look! Good luck!
