View Full Version : Thank you for your support, everybody + selling boat

Hi All,

I just wanted to write to thank you all for the support you have given me. Last week my mom passed away, and I am not usually in the habit of posting notifications about personal affairs, but I felt it necessary to tell some friends, since it would necessitate my absence from the site for some time. I received many heartfelt messages from members here, and that really means a great deal to me.

My mom had Alzheimer's disease, and I am sure that I do not have to explain just how horrible and heartbreaking it is. She had no life insurance, however I was able to give her the care she required in the final year of her life, which has really been my main priority for a very long time. She had many peripheral problems as a result, and between hospital stays, she needed to stay at a specialized facility that manages patients in her condition. It was extremely expensive, though I was able to get through it. No matter what, I was not going to compromise on her care because of money, and I gave her the very best care possible. Ultimately, those expenses wiped out everything I had saved, invested, and accumulated a lot of hospital bills, and that brings me to the second part of this post.

My boat is going up for sale, since paying for my mom's care is the very best use for it I could ever imagine. I will post details about it when I get home. Basically, it is an X-Stream (HydroStream), which were made from Canadian Edition molds by John Spaeth. X-Stream was an undertaking by Jim Contzen, and the boats were named as such since he had not yet acquired the HydroStream name yet. Soon after, they became what would be HydroStream's second generation.

It was made in 1994, as one of X-Stream's very first boats, and was used by Buster's Marine in New York at the Jacob Javits Convention Center boat show. It was ordered in the Mercury Racing colorway for this show. After the show, it went into a warehouse. It was never rigged. I bought it in 1999, and the boat has never been registered or titled. I have its Certificate of Origin, and the new owner can title it as a 2022, and becoming its first registered owner.

The boat was used a total of three times and has a mint Mercury Bridgeport EFI. There's too much to list in detail now, but the boat was rigged to be everything that would be what my dream HydroStream would be, so I am very proud of it. The boat is absolutely mint. It has a custom interior, and not a scratch on it. It has been stored indoors, covered, since the last time it was used in 2004 here on the river at Alva. The boat was never left outside. It includes a trailer that I purchased for the boat as well. It also has two custom covers, one cockpit and one full-size.

I'll have more details and photos soon. Thanks again everybody, for making S&F awesome for the last 20 years.

Greg,

I lost both of my parents a number of years back and it was beyond painful. But they had prepared for their eventual passing and were financially sound. I can only imagine what you went through and what you gave up to provide your mom with the best possible care in her final years. But that's just one of the things that separates you from many others. It must be incredibly painful to now have to sell one of your prized possessions to pay for her care. I wish I was in need of a boat so that you could at least know it went to a good home - which I'm sure it will. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Very sorry to read this Greg. Losing a parent, or any loved one, is tough but not as tuff as watching one fade away. Her illness is one of the worst. My wife has dealt with Alzheimer patients for years and I don't know how she does it. As a care giver she gets attached to her patients then has to watch them pass. I have been praying for your Mom, and you, for some time now. I will now thank God for ending her struggle but continue prayers for your recovery. You did everything you could and more than most would. I am proud to call you a friend because folks like you are few and far between. I am sure your Mom was proud to call you her son. I know you are busy right now but give me a call when things calm down. Your calls to me this past couple years during my personal struggles has been helpful. Talking helps things move forward. I am sorry for your loss but am very happy she is no longer suffering. Anything I can do to help, just call.

Being there for our parents until the end, shows what a good job they did at raising us. I lost mine in the late nineties. I still at times feel like an orphan. It is those time that I feel that is their way of guiding me in a different direction.
It's not easy to say goodbye to a parent .. it's a real tragedy when a parent has to say goodbye to a child. I'm very grateful that I didn't put my folks thru that.
Looking back, I made some hasty decisions while my heart was still broken. Now is the time to heal.
God speed mom.

He's never going to be able to replace a boat like that.

I am willing to contact my bank and set up an account that can be accessed by Greg only. It is in a small town near me and they have been great to work with over the 30 or so years I have been there. I ran all my business thru them. If there is support from ya'll I will make the arrangements once Joe finds out Greg's approximate obligation. I spoke with Greg several times about his situation with his mom and his unwillingness to compromise on her care hit home. Good parents are rare and obviously Greg's were among the group. I was watching Dad fail as he was watching his Mother struggle. I am now watching my Mom dwindle away since Dad passed. It's not an easy situation to deal with but it will determine what kind of person you really are. Greg's one of the good ones that stood strong for his Mom not letting his own obligations and life keep her from getting the best care possible. I personally owe the site, and Greg, immensely for the connections realized. Let me know if this is of interest to ya'll.

Hi All,

I'm not used to the feeling of being at a loss for words, but this is how I feel now. How could I not feel anything less than incredible gratitude to have so incredible friends and support? I've always been immensely thankful for the group of people we have here that are like family in many ways, and this really has touched me in a very powerful way. You are all just incredible, and I cannot truly express how grateful I am.

My situation was difficult, and my ultimate goal was making sure my mom had the absolute best care possible. Trading my boat or something else for that goal is something that anybody would do. I want to make clear how incredibly touched I am deep inside by these messages of support that really feels like being among family. I feel that my situation is really not worthy of such generosity, and there are so many people that deal with far worse and would be happy to trade their problems for mine. The recent tornados have really put a lot of that into perspective. My boat does mean a great deal to me, since it represents much of what I have done over the years and most of all, this site which is really all of you. I had the pleasure of creating and owning it for more than 20 years, and it has given me a lot of happiness. If I have to sell it to help pay medical bills, I think there is really no better use for it than that.

The only thing I feel I can ask for is your continued support for the site, since there are a lot of huge updates coming very soon. Much of the site is getting completely revamped to make it much easier to post photos and videos, especially from phones and tablets. The overall layout will remain the same so there will not be any confusion. But all of those decisions here come from you. 20 years ago, I stated that the site's design and direction is driven by its members, and that remains true.

The Team Membership always goes directly to server and bandwidth costs as well as maintenance, and that is really the best support I could ask for since it ultimately helps everybody. Sandi always asks me why I work overnights on the site without sleep and I explain that this is why. I consider it a responsibility to make this place the best I can. It has flaws, but they're always being worked on.

I hope that I communicated just how grateful I am for all of you. I spoke with Randy Rockhold yesterday and he put a lot of things into perspective for me. It might be a bit embarrassing for me to say that I was on the verge of tears when I read the posts here. I guess I sometimes don't see the big picture of things, and being grounded in that is important.

I could never ask for a better group of people here that I consider close friends. We have all been through a lot together and that is what I am most proud of.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart,
Greg

Okay guys I had a great 45 minute discussion with Greg this afternoon. Let me make a few things very clear:

1. This is not something he is asking for but I told him he didn't have a choice in the matter.
2. He in no way expects it or anything from us, but 100% appreciates what we as a group have done and continue to do (the internet is a little more powerful then he and helmut expected with their documented test sessions 20+ years ago).
3. I, "we", do expect something in return--He is going to get his boat out and run with us at upcoming events (life goes by too dam fast and he hasn't been out since 2004).

So the next step is setting our goal. That is done (25K) is the goal and every goal needs a time line (90 days) is the timeline. We are going to add to this post a daily total until the amount is reached. I have a spreadsheet started already.
We are going to run donations to Greg directly thru paypal ([email protected]). Please send me a copy of your receipt and note whether you would like your name mentioned or remain anonymous at [email protected] or text it to me at 386 527 18fourfive. I don't intend to miss this goal so please do what you can to participate in the "return of Greg being on the water in his boat with NO camera"

Joe, depending on what happens, any over could go toward the site...or just to Greg to help him out.

That will be up to Greg, I just want the heat off of him for the stuff he had to sign on personally to take care of his mom. I WILL make him get the boat out and run with us though, you can bet your bottom dollar on that.

Greg T , we have never met, but we have messaged each other over the years. My dad passed away in '12 from the effects of Alzhiemers also. He didnt know me when I would see him, thought I was his brother, Nel's. The last time I saw him, we were sitting in a common area with another Alz patient and he looked over at his freind and said, this is my son. I was blown away, and will always remember that. Then my mother was diagnosed with cancer in Sept 2015, passed away in Dec.

My parents divorced when I was 10, 1966. My dad supported up until us kids turned 18, and once my younger sister did turn 18, he informed my mom that he no longer would pay her anything. Being stuck in the middle of the 2 people I loved most, I looked at my mom and said let him go , I will take care of you. I didnt quite know what that would entail, or for how long, I just knew I had to be the one to care for her. After 40 years, and keeping her in a state of independence that she could have pride in, I believe without a shadow of a doubt that I have been blessed because of those actions.

Greg, I am confident that by God's Grace you will see the same handwriting in your life for your commitment to your Mother. God is holding her now and smiling down at you! Be at peace, remember all the great memories and live knowing that you gave her all!

1. You’re a good man.

2. I had a similar experience the final time I saw my grandfather who also passed of Alz. He was a big strong man who became frail, very frail. He didn’t recall who I was anymore, he lived in a dedicated home for this disease.

my son and I visited him and we watched a Disney movie with him and the other residents, I think it was “ice age”. My son was 4 or 5. When the movie was over the caregivers announced lunch was ready and they needed visitors to leave so they could feed everyone. Grandpa looked over and said “this was nice Chad, thanks for bringing Xander over to visit” I reached out to help him from his chair, he looked at me like I was crazy and popped out of the chair faster than I had seen in a decade.

we lost him a few days later, but I’ll always remember that last visit and how happy I was to see my gramps one last time instead of the shell of a man he had become.

Greg had been so generous to me and my family when my daughter Megan had her Cardiac Arrest. My thoughts and prayers are with you Greg,

As a young gun of the forum I thank all of you guys for the knowledge and wisdom that has been happily posted here for someone like myself to read and study. I also know how it can be with a family member with Alzheimer’s. I grew up with my grandmother from about Age 11 to 19, while my parents were out working my brother and I had to help her get around and take care of her. It really put the perspective in my mind that we have to take all the good days with the bad ones, but make the best out of all of them. My grandmother is still around (she’s 88 now) and most days she doesn’t remember who I am or my parents, but the occasional day we visit and she is full of energy just gives us more than a day to remember. I have less time than I used to to visit her as I’m bouncing between school and work every day, but I always try to squeeze a few visits in a week to see my tiny, white haired grandma. With that being said, I’m not a frequent poster, but I’m always happy to help a good cause and hopefully to take part in future events and runs when the time and budget allows.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

It's funny when you talk to Greg for any length of time it always comes back to the same thing. He thinks we built the site and tries to give credit for it's success to us. I understand what he is saying but he always seems to try and diminish his involvement as if this would have happened by itself. His perseverance is why the site is still here. Imagine dealing with all the scumbags that have shown up here with nothing but bad in their agendas. Sorting out who is who and being extremely fair. Dealing with bs lawsuits. He has given the benefit of doubt to many before taking action. There are so many things that go into running a site like this I doubt many of us could, or would be willing, to do it. My hat is off to the man. Because of his efforts we have a place to share info and a place to buy and sell. And it is all on Greg's dime.

It all started for me as a young kid seeing a Viper at the lake. I was always into hot rods and Ed Roth and all that, that little metalflake boat was just the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I found Screamandfly and it literally changed my life!

I have made so many personal friends here. Jay Smith who lives close enough for me to drop in and visit occasionally and his wife Kathy; all the guys up on Long Island, Frank Molé, Tom at the Nook, Scott Schwager, Ronnie Holzmacher, Kevin at Progression; the Wisconsin guys, Dan Oliver, Hazmat, Brian Carhart (RIP), Dan Bulger. These are just the guys that I've gotten to meet personally! I'm sure that I've forgotten a few! Sorry guys!

Then the guys that I talk to on the phone, Kevin Morris, Jeff Roth and RJ Dubiel, Bud Conner, Chris Carson, Ronnie Jetmore, Randy Rockhold, Mike S, and several more who I've both bought or sold parts to and traded advice and stories...

And all this because of Greg, who I've only gotten to talk to over the phone. Like has already been said, he always downplays his own contributions and gives credit to us. It's a great family!

Thanks again Greg!

Thanks also to all the rest of you guys!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

I have never been overwhelmed by feelings of appreciation and being among such incredible and supportive people as I am now. I’m having difficulty thinking of the words to thank you all. I have never been in a situation like this before. You are all family, because friendship is not a strong enough word. I’m just overwhelmed. I spoke with Joe yesterday and he is an extraordinary person as we know, in all the best ways possible. No matter what my resistance to this is, Joe made it clear that this is what he and you all want. I just want to give back to everyone here. Doing my best with this site has always been driven by that feeling. You have all given so much to each other and to me over the years. What you have all done is more than enough when I’m forever grateful for knowing you all - many of you for 20 years.

I love this community so much and this community is all of you.

Anyways, please let your friends know where to find the thread (now in the lounge) if you don't see their names posted thru-out the thread (there are several people who wanted to remain unseen). I’ve been tardy in reading this because I knew what it was for and wasn’t ready.

As some of you know, in a 3 yr period I lost my mom, my oldest sister and my dad.

My mom at 92 to Alzheimer’s, my sister at 73 to respiratory failure, and lastly my dad at 94, due to being 94.

It was rough.

The good was, my dad saved/invested very well for the 75 yrs he and my mom were married.

But w/the expensive/specialized care they required, that wiped it out.

As to Greg, I watched him lose his dad (met both his parents when they all moved to the Cape, a mile from me) and the toll that took.
I was pretty sure his mom would be close behind.

As to what he has done for us……., who could imagine?

Like many of us, I’ve been here from day one.

I cannot imagine my/our lives, our sport/hobby w/o it!

For me in particular, a guy that lived hot rod OBs from day one, I can’t imagine.

Rumble on the River, which became, arguably the largest, most successful, OB only get together,
was conceived, born, nurtured, blossomed…, here!

The people I’ve met, friends made, that have opened their homes to me/us in our travels, the history they’ve taught me…

All my goofy projects that I’ve struggled/cried through, never would have happened w/o Greg’s dream.

Ive gotten everything here from legal advice, real estate, auto, investing, life lessons…

I have been lazy of late, due to life, Bla, Bla, Bla and not kept up w/my subscriptions.

Greg, being Greg, hooked me up yrs ago for what he thought I had contributed.
I love him for that but pretty sure that hall pass has expired!

Joe, my thanks to you sir for putting this together.
Hopefully some day we can meet and shake hands over a beer.

To the rest of my family, I love you all and Greg is one of us.
And we take care of our own!

Investment sent and sponsorship renewal in process.

We made another $800.00 stride towards our goal today guys. I have a few checks and few more coming that I will get to Greg as a bundle so don't worry when they don't clear your account right away.

I want to personally thank todays contributors:

Hydroscreamin'-Thank you for your help
CDave-Thank you for your help
Instigator-Thank you for help

This brings our 90 day objective to a balance of $15,340.00 in only four days. A major thank you to all that have jumped in and my hats off to each and every one of you. This is a kick ass group of people "99% at least" and I am lucky and thankful to be part of it.

A little late, but Merry Christmas to everyone! Got to spend a good chunk of the day with my Grandmother (I’m on the right). I’m posting to keep this thread to the top so hopefully more can see and donate. Let’s get to the goal!:D

I hope you all had a great holiday and New Year. You have all made this Christmas and New Year one that I’ll always remember with so much overwhelming emotions from my profound gratitude for all you have done for me and S&F. I hope I can adequately express how thankful I am to all of you. I’m still in a state of shock, but in a good way. I’ve taken part in many similar support efforts for members over the years, so I already knew how incredible you all are, but being on the receiving end of such generosity really has me overwhelmed with emotions. I said that a few times already because I just can’t describe it any other way.

Anybody that knows me well knows how obsessed I’ve always been with trying to keep S&F a place truly worthy of the membership here. There is so much more planned for S&F, and it’s all of you that built this place, not me. I just can’t stress that enough.

Happy Mew Year everybody, and thank you so very much for all you have done, and continue to do that makes this community of people the ultimate representation of a dedicated community; both to our sport and each other.

I want to thank RB in NM for helping out with this project to assist our friend.

We are now at $15,690.00 and I have made a request for Greg to put this thread back up on the General Boating board so that people access it easier. Please comment if you are in agreement with my request.

Thanks again to all who are making this happen.

Sorry I'm a little slow but tell me where to donate guys. Greg I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you get through these hard times without going insane. I've been on this site since 2009 and have never seen another person like you put your heart into something like this to bring a group of people together. May God bless you and your family during these hard times.

That will make the goal a little harder to meet, if people don't know what it's about?

I just want to thank you all again for your incredible generosity and outpouring of support. I'm still not sure how to properly thank you all, but I will come up with something worthy of how incredible you all are.

Regarding the post, I moved it to The Lounge, but Joe asked that I bring it back here, and in that process, I think some posts were mixed up. I apologize for that.

I am pushing train out of the gate with my donation:

498706

Joe thank you for getting this effort off the ground. Sending a donation was the easiest thing I have done for such an incredible cause.

Losing a loved one is tough and for Greg to lose his Mom is probably the toughest thing he has ever gone through.

Let's keep the "Save Greg T's Boat" effort at the top and going strong !
