498910Hi I’m 18yrs old I’m located I’m Minden hills. Ontario.. I bought this voodoo 3yrs ago and noticed there was wood chunks floating in the water coming out the drain plug. So I decided I’m gonna rip the floor out.. then I ripped the floor out and just decided that the boat needed a ton of work so I decided that all do a full rebuild so follow along!!!

full videos and pictures will be posted on Instagram and YouTube @Zammit_Racing (https://www.screamandfly.com/member.php?u=287871)

Voodoos are cool little hulls. It’s a lot of work to restore but a lot of fun. I watched a couple of your vids, looks like you can use a finned roller. Bubbles can be drilled and injected with catalyzed resin using a syringe. Hope this is of some help

Hey buddy thanks for watching! I bought a roller for air bubbles now. but yes I will grind all air bubbles down I’m not to happy with them there.

appreciate the advice since it’s all new to me so it’s all helpful!

So the story of this boat is a hole formed near the back of the pad so the back half of the boat (pad, core, floor, transom pice added) was done about 3yrs ago right before I bought it but everything was factory. It needed to be rebuild years ago can’t believe it was still holding up my 300+lbs Mercury 75hp on a 4”setback?
Before I started I was just gonna replace the floor but as I cut my way into the boat I realized that its gonna need everything replaced so it got real from there. So I got planning to split the top half off so I could get at everything since it’s so small, I invested in advanced Composite materials so I can make it as light as possible so I can go fast!!!
enjoy the build it will a very special voodoo when it’s all built up!

It gets a lot easier quickly. What we did the first 40hours of lays we could do now in 4 and it would look as good or better. There’s two of us working together and I lay out the sheets and flatten them down by hand best I can while the other preps resin and wets out the sheets while I fin roll. I had a bit of a surprising revelation along the way because I kept trying to roll the bubbles out, and now I try and lay the glass flat. What that means is often my air bubbles which I had to work very hard at first to remove were not “under the glass needing removed” but rather the glass was stretched out a bit too much and needed to be pushed into the corners and transitions. This means I now mostly roll using the finned roller in towards the corners and transitions to help the glass lay down tight. Then after it’s in there right I roll the rest of the bubbles out of the end of the glass mat. Gotta watch you don’t pull the mat back out of the corners though and make a new air pocket.

keep up the good work, I’ll follow along best I can.

Thanks for that. My dad is helping me along the way with the mixing and layout part since it’s hard to do by myself but yea it’s kinda been just me working on it till now because the “rebuild” part of the build I want it to be as perfect as I can get it. I like to take my time and do the best I can just the way I am! Didn’t know a thing about fiberglass till I started this build. But after I closely inspected the core job I did I know exactly what I need to improve on and did a way better job on laminating the transom very happy with that!
new video soon!

just saw your build pics beautiful work! Looks awesome:smiletest:

I cut out the floor and grinded as much carpet glue and excess glass and resin as I could before I split the boat.
the carpet glue was melting from the grinded and was slinging hot wet glue all over me was not fun got burnt a couple times. Also ripped out the float boxes witch were wet and heavy.

Time to pull the motor off.. So I built a stand outta scrap wood, I didn’t have the proper hook to thread in to the flywheel to hoist the motor off so I had a pice of steel plate bent at 90° and drilled 2 holes and threaded in 2 smaller bolts in the flywheel it had smaller threads around the big center thread that’s probably not good the lift 300+lbs on that but that’s all I could whip up at the time and drilled a hole on the vertical side of the steel so I can hook it up to a chain.
I have bought the proper lifting hook now so I fell a bit better about re rigging!

I flipped the boat over so I can build a frame to sit the hull in so I can split the top half off. So I started to profile the the bottom hull onto 1/2” plywood, About a couple hundred cuts later I had all my pieces cut and ready to start building was very happy with the way it turned out! Boat fits in perfectly real tight fit.
I put 2 2x4s along the bottom and rested the frame on 4 snowmobile dollies so I can roll it out side to cut and grind so I don’t coat the garage in fiberglass dust…

Time to split the hull! I took a Milwaukee multitool and went around the hole boat, There was no seam to base my cut on and there’s not much to base it on so I split the difference and cut away took about 9hr to cut went threw about 5+batteries! Fortunately it worked out perfectly I cut it in the right spot and I got a nice surface around the whole lip so that’s a relief because I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do it…

Time to rip out the transom!!!
the transom is original form factory.. The bottom half under the splash-well there was a piece of 1/2” ply wood added then glassed in by a fiberglass guy before I bought it, Im guessing that was added because the wood was so soft the bolts had nothing to back onto. Makes sense because the wood is so soft/rotten!
Not sure how it was still holding up my 75merc that weight just over 300lbs witch is sitting on a 4”setback
and the boat is only rated for a 50hp maximum
transom literally fell out as seen below!

It’s amazing how strong fiberglass is when you see how thin the skins are on these things and yet holds your motor up even with rotted transom. Your going to have a sweet little rig when it’s all done

Zammit_Racing

Tell me about it it’s unbelievable! I’m building this transom to hold a 200+hp motor. But all probably never get there as the boat would be under water form the weight but will be strong enough to hold anything!

Nicely worked , personally I would have still used Baltic birch or equivalent in the transom etc and balsa core as needed.
Hope it works out perfectly for you.

Got my core materials I will be doing a full composite build so it lasts forever also this will be a light weight build! Gonna build it strong and as light as possible!
couple pics of the first core going in. More to go in later on! Not to happy with all the air bubbles. Will be grinding them down! It was my first time fiberglassing I probably should of tried on something else first but whatever that’s the way I am just go for it ahah! But it worked out it got a good bond and it’s doing it’s purpose, just a couple air bubbles need to be corrected.

Got my Cossa transom epoxied in and I also cored the side wings, I thought to doing that as I was looking how to make it real strong, So it’s basically a full transom now “worlds first full transom hydrostream” ??..
The side wings are very thin and it would of been a bit of a pain to fiberglass the Cossa to the wings without the core there because the Cossa stuck out about 3/4” so I would of had to wrap it in, So it worked out even better with the core there and now it’s crazy strong without any glass over it yet!

So I was thinking of adding more core to the bottom of the boat so I bought a sheet of divinycell foam it’s about 3/16” of a inch thick. Glued down with CSM edges filled in with thickened resin and 1 layer of 1708 over all the core 2 layers on the pad, not the prettiest job was in a bit of a rush to get it done but in not to worried about it, it will never be seen.

Here it is! Full transom/knees possibly the first hydrostream with a full transom and first voodoo with transom knees?..
it’s extremely strong can’t move it at all and extremely light weight!
I rate this transom for 200+hp. But would never happen as the boat is too small to float it but 100% can hold the weight and power witch is crazy on such a small boat.
4-layers of 1708 over Cossa board 3-layers over the side wing core, knees tabbed in with 6oz cloth followed by 1708 then CSM over everything to tie in all the tabs, in told 9-layers was put into the transom.

Back at it. Been working 7 days a week for 4 months straight. Using my leftover 1/2” pvc coring to core the bow of the boat so it can be walked on, I always walked on it before but definitely shouldn’t of sine the fiberglass is super thin and I could of broke threw, also put my dash board in with 3/4” Cossa, and I put 1/8” foam up the side boards of the boat to give it some strength witch it does.
1lyr of 1708 on both sides of pvc on the bow.
CSM over dash board, and side board foam.

Been working like crazy on the boat lately getting so close to putting back into one pice again!
Made a seat mount and glassed it in, got a pice of 1/4”aluminum plate drilled and taped for the foot pedal no screws going into anything on the boat, Put a strip of honeycomb at the back for the gas tank to sit on so it won’t sit on a angle, Made a floor mount shifter plate and glassed it down,
I made fiberglass cylinders to run wires/hydraulic lines “rot prof”
Made a mount for the Tethered cord out of 1/16” stainless plate glassed it right above where my leg will sit.
Bought new led lights and put them in, I had put that pvc trim there when I bought the boat and had the led’s and loved them, So I had to put them in again went with just blue..
Threw a quick coat of waxed gel on the inside where you’ll see, I will be sanding it and do some filler work to get all the imperfections fixed, Then I will be Gelcoating the whole inside of the boat.

It’s almost been a year since I posted anything on my boat been so busy with projects, but here’s my attempt at making a factory looking ridge back exhaust snout, I’m happy with it but I could of done better, also put on a nose cone that was a nightmare to fair in because it didn’t really fit it was too big I’m guessing because there made for a much bigger outboard this it only a 75hp..
also cut off the skeg and cut a new one out of 1/4” aluminum plate and welded & faired it in.

The splatter looks great, way better than mine. Regarding the skeg that makes me nervous its generally considered a nono in high perf applications to have a welded skeg. The work you did looks good mind you but iirc s&f will not allow lower units with welded skegs to be listed in the for sale section for safety reasons so at bare minimum keep a close eye on it for cracking.

Zammit_Racing
06-30-2023, 04:29 PM
I saw other people cutting there skegs off and welding new ones on so I thought It’d be easier to do that to mine rather than try and fix it.
Honestly I don’t know to much about that stuff as I’m just a kid trying to learn/ teach myself..
I welded it on a year ago and I’ve been worrying since then if it’s gonna hold up/strong enough.

PLEASE tell me if anyone of you see me doing something wrong so I know.

Did you cut and weld in a straight line, or put some zig zag in it? ---‐---------? /\/\/\/\?

How fast do you think it's going to be?

I run welded skegs on merc v6's, no problems so far. As long as you do a good job, put some tooth /\/\/\/ in it,... your fine,.. for what a 75hp is going to throw at you.

I'm impressed with you welding the nose cone, takes alot of heat to get a weld to stick to that case.

Zammit_Racing
06-30-2023, 08:35 PM
Unfortunately I cut it in a straight line, I didn’t really know what I was doing but thought I was doing it right.. it was my first time welding aluminum so honestly I’m not to sure how well the welds are gonna hold up, for speed I was hoping for high 60s to low 70s is my goal but will see if I get there, I just went out to the shop to feel it and it actually feels kinda solid but I’m not too confident in my job as I don’t really remember how it went since I did it 14 months ago.

Yeah,..... it might hold up? I would feel alot better with /\/\/\.
I had one done at a welding shop, 110hp, they straight welded, it held for me, but the next owner broke it. Now I do my own skeg repair.

Those cones don't fit much better on a v6.

Good to see a youth with some motivation. I bet your excited to get after terrorizing the waterways.

All have to figure something out.
I can not wait to get this boat back on the water and see how it runs after what’s all been done.
I'm a month away from putting it back in the water so now I gotta figure out what I’m gonna do with the skeg ..

LakeFever
07-01-2023, 05:32 AM
Is that cone for a v6 or an inline?

as for the skeg remember its about fatigue and load cycles. It will likely work just fine at first but for how long before it cracks and or fails? Maybe never, maybe? Myself id rather not risk injury or poasible death or even walking away losing the boat on a maybe. I would run it if i had nothing else but id be looking that thing over with eagle eyes after each run until i sourced another lower. Just my $0.02

Zammit_Racing
07-01-2023, 08:52 AM
I not to sure if the cone is for a inline or not,I bought it from my Preformance boat marina that sells them, doesn’t say anywhere what it is but if I were to guess it’s the V6 one, I had to do a lot of grinding to get it to half ass fit and still not 100% happy with it.
Im gonna talk to my local propeller shop and see if we can possibly redo it since they do skeg repairs every day or look at new lower unit..

Nice Job on the exhaust and the nose cone! And the boat too. Sorry about the skeg. Lot of bad can come from that coming off. Although technically you are not going that fast, It's fast for that size boat. It still wont be fun if it comes off. If you do get another lower unit, at the speeds you are running you may be better off without the nose cone. They look cool but they say they are unnecessary below 80 MPH and even slow you down. Bobs Machine sells a transom mounted water pickup. You can jack the motor sky high and still have water pressure. If you are interested. I have the water pickup and a lower unit from a 115 that has been drilled and filled for it already. It should bolt right up to your motor. The difference is the gear ratio. Yours should be 2.3:1 this is 2.07:1. It will spin the prop faster. I also have a 22P Quicksilver Chopper prop in excellent condition that the line cutters have been modified to fit. I will sell them cheap. Let me know if you are interested.

Hey buddy! Thanks for the kind words! Yea I’m bummed out about what I did to my skeg.. yea I may be interested in that since I only have the one lower unit for it, just upset about the fact that I put so much into the the lower unit just to find out I screwed it up..

Look at it for what it is; A lesson. We all face lessons every day theres an endless supply of em lol. Dont let it ruin your fun man get creative maybe hang the empty case of that one in your garage for wall art. Cool piece plus you made it yourself more to be proud of. Anyways if i had a nickle for every time i built something only to have it fail or not even work at all. Its part of the game

It would be pretty cool to hang it on the Garage wall! I’m not gonna risk running it because it’ll ruin the fun because I’ll be in the back of mind every time I get in the boat.
just kicking myself for making a mistake.
But at least I’m learning about it the easy way not out on the water ya know.

Paint time! I painted the bottom and ended up with a bunch of runs in the paint so I ended up sanding the entire bottom and re-sprayed it, the second time turned out beautiful. This was my first time ever using a spray gun so I was trying to get a feel for it.
my 2 compressors couldn’t keep up so I was sprayed at a real low psi at the gun, after the first minute they couldn’t hold good enough pressure so I had to make the best of it.
I used Awl grip epoxy prime & Awl craft paint.

Thank you! It was tricky to spray and it didn’t help that i built a paint booth in my shop a wood frame hung from the ceiling and plastic hanging down with no air exhaust or return it would fill up very quick with overspray and is was so much that I couldn’t see what I was doing hah but it turned out pretty good.

Got the boat flipped over and painted the top!
honestly if I were to do it over again I’d do it in gel paint it real hard to spray without getting runs and fish eyes, but it turned out good.

Looks great! Only you will see the imperfections for the most part no one else will notice. One of the difficult things about building your own stuff is you know all the flaws. Be proud of what you have accomplished here this is a huge effort and your build turned out really good.

Your right everyone doesn’t even notice any imperfections on the boat there so minor that I forget about them, but yea I can’t believe I’ve came this far if feels so good to see it shine again!

Congrats! Quite an accomplishment, especially for a young man. Stay safe and let us know what it runs after you dial it in

Thank you! Will do, it feels way quicker now than before I guess because I’m lighter now and the motor is higher on the jack plate. all have to get her all dialed in so she runs her best!

Awesome job, boat came out great, you would likely have a faster better performing setup with a smaller lighter engine like a Merc 40-50 3 cyl ( can easily make 90+hp) omc 3 cyl or 2 cyl, or even a yamaha 90.

Thank you! Yes I know the motor is too big and heavy it’s all I got for it right now but honestly it runs better than expected being the motor is heavier than the boat, in the future all change it up.. will see.

Sad to say but my boat is For sale. Don’t want to let it go but I have big plans so I need the space and money for the future project, it’s got new everything witch I don’t need to state everyone on here already knows what this boat is about…
Less than a hour of run time after the 2 year restoration.

After all that work, I can't believe you are selling it with less than an hour on it. How much are you asking for it and how fast does it go?

Zammit_Racing

I know I don’t wanna let it go but I have big plans but I need to sell so I have the money to do it. I’m asking $17,500 I have more into it than that so it’s a reasonable price.
