What is the recommended filter to add to the fuel line that's in addition to the engine mounted filter?

I think your engine has a screw on canister? That's all you need, and adding another may cause a restriction.

Correct to assume the same thinking with a 2010 Mercury 3.0L 225 Sport XS? I have the internal screw in filter with the red top under the cowl and I added a remote screw on filter/ water separator 11 years ago with no issues.
