I am getting ready to freshen up my 260 and looked into getting new rings for it. The last time I bought them they were around 400.00
This time they are upwards of 600.00!!! WTH....about fell on the floor!
I contacted an engine builder about possibly getting a discount on the TiN rings. He said he doesn't use those any longer and now uses chromoly black oxide coated rings
in nicasil bores. I thought I would get other peoples thoughts on using those rings. I trust the guy but have never heard of this done. They are much cheaper....

Years ago that’s all Gene Treichel used when building nikisel motors . Who is your engine builder ? Hf…

I usually do all my own motor work...I was just looking for a better price on gold rings and that is when I heard about the black oxide coated rings. I don't want to say who I heard this from...don't want to cause a pissing match. I never had good luck with Gene, so I'm not sure that helps my decision.

Have you actually run these rings in nic motor?

260's originally came with moly rings, TiN rings came out in later 90's to address complaints of early ring replacement. Moly rings seat quicker are easier on cyl plating but do not last quite as long as gold rings.

Thank You guys! I figured they would be ok to use...but of course there had to be a downside to them. I was told they would go 100 hours, not bad. My current rings have 120 on them and still have some life left.
The big question?? Merc rings= $600.00 or Black Oxide rings $200
Mrzip, do you know how many hours are on the rings in your motor?

Quite a few... It's a fishing motor.. I checked compression other day.. No Problems.

Who sells these black oxide rings? Any adverse affects to nicasil?

Are black oxide rings actually black?

Yes , they are black. Gene gave me the merc number to order and use but I can't find the part number we used then .I do remember I had to order 6 because they came 2 per pack. hf...

Only thing I’ve been told on the 260 that I’ve used, is chrome with titanium nitrate coating. I never heard of the inexpensive black rings. Are the black rings good for super high rpm motors?

I’d just bite the bullet and buy a set of the Gold Ti Nitrate rings. Nic bore 2.5s are getting harder to come by and hanging a piston in the bore at high RPM due to a cheap ring breaking or sticking will make a nice window in your block. Don’t ask how I know. I see Powers has them for $599, which is a lot, but a lot less than replacing/repairing your powerhead.

you may want to check with Dean at Wizard too, his pistons use merc rings. Is this what your talking about with a stuck piston in an expensive nik block? haha check out number 4!

John Marles has sets Chromoly rings that apparantly last just a long as gold rings and does not hurt the nic. He said he has seen no issues with them. $200 shipped for 12 rings. Probably Ti coated.

Thanks. Good to know. That guy really knows his sh!t, so if he says it works, I would take his advice.

That looks good to what I did to my first 260 years ago. It stuck the piston so hard that it broke the crank, the rod snapped and windowed the block so bad you could stand on one side and read a newspaper on the other!

These are the rings I have been referring to, they are black oxide coated.

I'm leaning towards staying with the gold rings. John said the black oxide rings would last 100 hours...does that mean they need to be replaced somewhere around 80-90?
I know the gold rings will go at least 120 hrs. It's worth the money to me for another 30-40 hours of life. Not to mention the cost of gaskets and seals to do a re-ring.
