I am looking for some help on performance mods on a stock merc 2.4 that is approx a mid 80s motor. I a going thru the motor as far as bearings, 1 piston etc, and I would like to get a little more out of it while I'm at it. I have a Bob's tuner, lite flywheel, good wires. What else can I do without spending a ton of dough ? I have heard that 2 liter heads will bring up my compression. I have 2 piece heads now can I run any 2 liter heads? Are velocity stacks worth it ? I am not trying to build a radical piece but I want a little more hp. Thanks in advance, Nat:D
p.s. rsty stay off this thread

Those are all questions for T-Rex.
He did all of that work and wrote that awesome display of the english language :D .
Just figured that link would help get your wheels moving.
He roams around here, but you'll have a better chance of catching him on the byuboyz message board.
Good luck,
Brian
Here's more from T-Rex on that same motor-

It's too late for you to do this but...
I think the cheapest mod is replacing the powerhead- depending on the severity of your disease.
It actually is cheap, relativly speaking and you get much much power. Then you trade or sell you PH to cut costs.

Hey Nat, I've been pondering the same thing myself - how to get the most out of a chrome bore 2.4 200 without spending a fortune.
T. Rex's article is great (once you get used to the coonassonics). He did a lot of different things and obviously some things were more effective than others. We need him to jump in here and tell us which of the mods were the most effective and in what order.
My guess is these were the most effective mods:
1. Increased compression
2. D-shaped boost ports and enlarged finger ports in pistons
3. Increased port timing (cut decks and machined piston tops)
I think the rest of the stuff was relatively minor from a power standpoint.
How about it Rex?
Nat, I think you can use any 2.0 heads from '84 up. I'm running a set from an '84 150 that measure about 34cc and pressure is between 145 and 150 psi. The heads Rex cut .075 were the original 2.4 heads. My original 2.4 heads measure about 37cc.

Hello, what I do is radius the boost port holes. If you D shape them, you have to take too much off and I am lazzy.;) I think they would also flow better, a radius is nicer to air than a sharp edge. If you need parts for your motor this is where I go, your local freindly yammi dealer, they take thous mercs off and they are'nt going anywhere other than the DUMP. Happy Hunting:rolleyes:

I like all these suggestions and that motor by T-Rex looks like what I want to do. I need to figure out how to port these motors, I have never cut on one before. If I shave .075 of my 2.4 heads will I still be in pump gas range? LaserModVee do you have a guess on how much hp that 2.4 put out ? -Nat

I think most of the experts here would say that if you cut the ports on a chrome-bore motor, you really should have it re-chromed. That's why T. Rex increased port duration by shaving .050 off the decks and the piston crowns. Comp ratio stays the same yet everything port-wise happens .050 sooner (or later).

200 tips. mine ran 98mph on a viper. I had a 2.4 200 with a 7 peddle 225 frontcase half with reeds and cages from a high perf 2.5efi and 225 big bore carbs. On the block I ground a little in the exhaust chest and rod slots. compression was 145lbs. i had a bobs tuner and the liner out of the drilled can. I had no problem keeping up with my friend in the same boat with a brigeport motor.
