I have a 1958 mark 55 and putting it on a 3 point hydro and need the gaskets for the RACING lower unit, from the top of the tower down. I posted a topic little more then 9 months ago for a lower unit rebuild and got that done, hopefully I will have it in my hands within the next couple of weeks. If anyone knows were to get gaskets that would be great.
Thanks,
Edward

The (smaller) vintage merc racing stuff is more abundant on the AOMC (Antique Outboard Motor Club, Inc.) sites. You can check out www.oldmercs.com and vintageoutboard.com as well. Both have been around a long time... great old motors!

What paint are you using? My first thought would be seal it just so it doesn't leech out on the edges and you get an even finish.. has it been coated with anything before too?
I'm in the middle of a bunch of varnishing but nothing is nice or fun..just a bunch of maple and poplar boards

It has something that makes the canvas get tight after you staple it down and it like a gel I think other then that, thats it.

Oh new canvas..I should of asked.. if it's to make it tight no don't seal it...I can't remember what it's called but I'm sure someone will and tell you for sure...it doesn't say anything in directions on can?
The stuff I've used to shrink it tight you don't seal otherwise it doesn't tighten up..

Ok..I keep trying to make the pics bigger but they just get blurry on my phone...it's clear or pigmented? 30+ years old I would say I'd clean it up enough that there's nothing going to keep the paint from adhering or show thru etc at least.

To be honest I have no idea, it has a slight tint on brown to it (from all the dust). When the boat was right side up you can see every thing in the bow just like it wasn't there if that helps. I can ask my dad what it is if you want.

Shrinking canvas to fit- if the canvas is cotton or linen, it can be shrunk to fit using what is called Aircraft Wing Dope- a lacquer based material. This is normally done only on new canvas. You can get more info on this- and allowable paints- from various aircraft repair sites that deal in small or antique aircraft. On these aircraft the wings are often canvas covered to keep the weight down.

it was originally cotton but it started to tear. Now its fabric/canvas/linen and dope was used to tighten it, my grandfather was big in airplanes, but it was not used for this. My dad bought the fabric in the 80's and he thinks that the dope sealed it, there's also silver paint used to protect the fabric/canvas/linen from the sun. Would I be safe to through paint on it and would I need to clean it?

It should be safe to paint it as long as you use an enamel based paint- not a lacquer or any of the modern polyurethanes which may start to shrink the fabric. Thin the paint(if you must) only with mineral spirits. As for cleaning, I would not do anything more than just a weak mix of Ivory Soap and cold water to wash the fabric before painting. Test the paint on a small section of the fabric before doing the entire deck section. I also agree with your Dad that the wing dope probably sealed it. You could also check out various web sites on recovering aircraft wings- Piper Aircraft being a large manufacturer of aircraft with fabric covered wings back in the 1930’s-1950s. These sites may give you additional info on painting after shrinking the fabric in place with wing dope, since Piper built planes in numerous different colors.
Many years back I hung around with the late Jim Hurtibise, Super-Modified and Indy car racer from the 1950’s-‘70’s. Jim used to drive the locals crazy with his antics flying a bright red fully aerobatic J-2 Piper Cub with clipped wings….but I never asked him how he painted it…..and I didn’t ask him for a ride in it either!

I wouldn't want to go for a ride either, my dad bought a 2 quarts of red paint from a friend that is a boat restore and it a blank can and only has a red painted cap, not sure if he would know if it should be enamel based or not.
I'll check out some other plane recovery sites.

We tried it out. It is AWESOME! It’s very fast still some tuning left to do. We need a Electric tachometer you put around a spark plug wire and put in how many cylinders there is. (Where would we get one?)

If you wrap a single wire, you don't need to tell the tach how many cylinders you have; with these magnetos, it would be silly to wrap more than one wire and then ask the tach to do some math. I think a Tiny Tach brand or similar is what you are looking for.

If you just type in tach you'll get plenty..
I had one of these for testing when I was having tach issues..
Just read and check description but think this should work fine..there are even cheaper ones but....
