Why are we not seeing turbos!
Boost everything!

Pump gas and boost not so friendly. Lots of heat with boost as well. There was seven marine with boost already

Im sure it will come though, plus cam and head work and tuning. Its all in the works its merely time. money. and weight concerns for many of us

e85 is the answer to most of those concerns.

Turbo Ls engines making 1000 plus on pump gas!

Not too many marinas carry e85. plus it soaks up water, quickly. We dont run any ethanol laced fuels in our small engines ever.

if we're talking about pleasure cruising vessels then ill agree. but if we're talking about go fast toys then i doubt the fuel would even stay in the tanks long enough to absorb any water.

Weight and heat are the reasons we are not seeing more boost being run. The new Mercury V8 block was designed to be in same weight class as its 300XS two stoke predecessor. There for it does not have the structural integrity to hold head studs in place when big boost or static compression gets added in heavy doses. Mercury racing is setting everything in its new outboard lineup to run on 87 octane due to the warranty abuse that takes place when they release a 93 octane requirement motor. E-85 is the enemy for marine application "we want water everywhere other then in our fuel"-if you need octane run partial race gas.

The other thing to remember when comparing an LS in an automotive configuration is that they very rarely get held at wide open throttle for more then 20 seconds at a time. Boat motors are run against the limiter for 30 minute intervals all the time, so its apples and oranges for required lifespans.

I did an e85 280 a few years ago. My boat has a 26 gallon tank and I made it about 26 miles.

I think turbos work well and have minor efficiency advantages in the auto work but with marine outboards and the constant load the motors face it seems the OEMs have found more reliability with large displacement N/A motors that don't have to work as hard. For example the yamaha 4.2 V6 platform and the mercury 4.6 V8 motors. With modern technology and that amount of displacement they could make far more than the 250 and 300 hp they produce but being somewhat "detuned" helps increase engine life.

Texas speed purpose built for boat, wot

I had an Alcohol dune truck 514 C.I. with a 1471 BDS and it was almost exactly twice the consumption of the Sunoco Supreme 112 that I bought barrels of. It stayed cool but was a hassle to transport that much along with the flushing and fogging that we had to do. Silver lake was a ton of work looking back...

I assumed you were talking about the four stroke outboards. Mike at Sterling and Mercury Racing are both using turbos on their 1100 HP and up motors marine motors.

Turbo outboard will be! Watch

For race boats that can both get it done with two strokes and burn so little fuel? Why bother reinventing the wheel. The power to weight of two strokes in undisputed so the four stroke efficiency/grteeny thing is redundant. Not to mention by using existing two stroke engines its considerably MORE green than manufacturing a new four stroke. Plus four strokes are marginally cleaner, not exponentially.

Im sure there will be four stroke swaps on these light weight hulls at some point we just havent hit that yet. Maybe if one of the Manufacturers wanted to get smart and make a LIGHTER four stroke that was boosted with warranty for smaller boats? Then we'd be off to the races so to speak

Have you seen the new Mercury V6 race motor. You know its going to hit the market as a consumer product variation at some point. Mercury is NOT asleep at the wheel "everything they are introducing as of recent has set sales records".

Yep looks and sounds great too. I agree its coming down the pipe its merely for now theres not much sense boosting any existing four strokes for us small lightweight boats streams etc. I'll be VERY excited when a four stroke arrives thats lighter than a V6 and makes more sizzle. Its doable

My son needs one for his STV as well. We just have to be patient -

What are these expected to weigh? A 375lb, 15” mid, SM case would be a killer motor on small cats. Hell, I’d consider running twins on a small 22’ - 24’ Cat. But the market is so small it’s not likely to happen.

I think you will be surprised. We spent a lot of time around key people from Mercury this weekend and they have their finger on the pulse of what it will take to please many people. The bass world is not small and there are many who want fast bass boats with the dependability and drive-ability offered from the four stroke. They also realize that other small boat companies need a viable new motor option in order to survive. Stuart Halley (Mercury Racing G.M.) stressed that all of their projects have fallen behind due to work force issues, supplier issues, "caused by work force issues", and the overwhelming demand for their current product. He said "you will have to be patient but there are good things to come".

Turbo is the future

Whaaaaat
05-25-2021, 08:44 PM
I like turbo. But why? Better off building expansion chamber pipes for existing 2 stroke.

4 jokes are just that, a joke. Add superchargers, turbo's, nitrous, unobtanium fuel. There all just overcomplicated car motors attempting to match what a 2 stroke does better.

What the industry needs is a turbo diesel outboard with a PTO mount for the commercial guys and these giant center console sleds and butt ugly useless outboard sport fish.

I think supercharger more then turbo for an outboard. You need to get on a plane without waiting for boost.

It dawned on me long ago that the big shots put their drawers on the same way as everybody else. No need in treating them any different than anybody else.
I never understood "yes men" .. yes that's a great idea, yes your the best ... unless they are looking for something in return .. or maybe it's just the fame ...

The big shot can usually learn much more from the common man with enough courage to tell them the truth. More time's than not , the big shot tends to scamper away in a hurry rather than say .. give me your number .. I'd like to talk to you one on one. But I guess they know the outcome of that too ... since it's the simple questions that are the hardest to answer .. ;)

I really don't know exactly how many components it takes to assemble a current year model 300R , but I would be interested in what percentage is made in the USA and how much is made in Usa China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Canada, Mexico .. etc .

Main reason they are going 4 stroke is EPA bullshift..... but hey....weren't the Optimax's cleaner burning than the Verados?

Now that he works for Boeing, maybe he will build a 3,000 HP jet powered outboard that will run on diesel.........
