This project started last august with 48 hour run from Washington state to Hibbing Minnesota and back non stop. We purchased it site unseen from photos posted. When we finally made the trip and got to see it picture hide a lot This boat was in rough shape for sure and my son in law was not too happy with our great buy at first. I guess changing out a wheel bearing in 90 degree Minnesota heat on hot asphalt was not fun either but had to be done. Got it home and cleaned it out bee hives spiders and such rotting floor we thought the worst part was to show it’s ugly head the dreaded core Much to our surprise it was the first good thing about this boat purchase. Things started to look a little better. Pictures and more of the stages to follow

Did it have power? Or what are you looking/going to get?

Definitely my kids are not here to help load all these pictures and we are ready to spray the last color next weekend and clear with pearl but I told Greg I would share the project on this site so I will get it done one way or another all while still working on my own Valero that is getting the core replaced in my spare time too. Lol

The boat came without any rigging we will be running a 1989 gt 200 on a 5.5 inch jackplate hydraulic steering all new wiring. I do love to build motors verses sanding and spraying But I can see the end is near and soon will come to the fun part of rigging

Great motor..is the motor running or are you going to be working on it? If working on it/rebuilding it going to do anything to it?

These pictures are really hard to load here for me but maybe I will get some help soon. Every weekend it seems we get more done. Guessing you can see without me explaining for the most part but I’m just another weekend warrior shooting in my garage with the ****tiest tools possible lol

Looks really good! Is that gel or paint?

phil blomquist
05-18-2021, 09:02 AM
This is gel coat with a clear additive then sprayed with a top coat clear made specifically for more Uv protrction

Seems like I must be tapping on picture load twice or doing something wrong here I wish I can load all pictures and then do a selection as we go through the stages. Sorry but loading off a phone is not that easy. I’d rather spray the gel. Lol

Looks great, I’m interested in the materials your using can you tell us what they are?

phil blomquist
05-18-2021, 07:31 PM
We are using Fiberlay for all the gel coat material no wax mixed with Duratec clear additive. Sand that down with 120 grit then spraying Duratec sun shield clear top coat

phil blomquist
05-18-2021, 07:56 PM

Is these pics straight after spraying no cut/buff? What nozzle size and spray gun are you using?

phil blomquist
05-19-2021, 09:06 AM
No cut or buff in these pictures all done with a harbor freight purple gun drilled out to 1.9. Done in my garage with the cheapest tools possible. Lol this is the second boat I’ve sprayed so no real skills but have learned from past mistakes and researched what I didn’t learn.

I do know a little bit about fiberglass though. But yes when I have spare time I do a little grinding. It’s getting 1708 ,balsa bedded in structural putty and covered back with 1708

Great info thanks. For a guy with “no skill” your putting down some pro level finish. Giving me hope to spray gel on mine soon. I’m really enjoying this work, looks like you are too

Thank you I do enjoy once a project is in its final stages I’ve also got one great friend Ron Pratt to guide me along the way so I can’t take all the credit. It’s also my son in law Chris Renggli has worked really hard it’s a lot of Taping ,sanding, both of them are my eyes especially shooting the white and clear

So one thing I learned in this process is when your sanding old gel and repairs there are always spots that we just couldn’t see so we tried something new to us We mixed up gel coat with micro balloons with a little surface sealer for a primmer coat which We rolled on three coats. Really helped get a smooth surface and sanded pretty easy
