Picked up an old race boat a few days ago for cheap since it was local and did I mention cheap? I have an old race OB that would be perfect for this thing... but... what is it?

It's not really a runabout... or a hydro, though it does have some small fins on the bottom so it's sort of like a hydro, but it's rounded in the front but it's not a shovelnose... so... what is it?

No HIN or anything, and I get that it's most likely home built, but what I find confusing is that I can't even tell what type of class this was built for. Guy I bought it from said it was used at Kiekhaefer Mercury for testing, which is most likely bull****. It was only 20 minutes away from Mercury tho?

Idk. Help me hive mind. What is it? What class is it? Has anyone seen anything else like it? Under the pyramid is a small gas tank.

Runabouts are usually pointed at the bow tho, no? I've never seen a blunt runabout. ???

I figured it out. It's called a Mini Max or Sea Flea, and was produced by William D Jackson, found a really ****ing cool video about this guy:

Not a MiniMax. No time to see the video now, but I have built several MiniMaxae--this aint one. If its bottom is flat or V, it is a runabout despite its rounded bow. If it has sponsons that project below the bottom with running surfaces, it is a hydro. Most likely a flatbottom runabout with a weird bow. Concur probably a Glen-L or Hal Kelly plan. OK, I couldn't resist and sort of flipped through the video. True MiniMax is at 17:45.

It has two sponsons that jut downward maybe 1.5", so yeah it's sort of a hydro. But what class of hydro?

Quite possibly not truly a racing boat, but a fun boat. In terms of class, they are determined, at least back in the day, by boat length and cubic inches. For example, when I first started in OPC, to make the Class D rules boat had to be at least 13' long and under 49.99 cubic inches. I am sure it was/is the same for Stock outboard, the form of racing this boat might fit in. I don't know if Stock Outboard also had weight rules or not--OPC had minimum weights. So depending on length, this could be an A Hydro, B Hydro or C Hydro (or whatever classes the length allowed for), depending on what engine you hung on the back. Many guys would show up at Stock Outboard races with a trailer that had at least one runabout hull and one hydro hull on it, with a box with three or four motors. Mix and match and run a bunch of races.

This thing is 8' long, and i'll be running a Mercury lightning/hurricane on it. Going to be redoing the hull with graphite/epoxy for more SPEEEEEEEED. Being so tiny it doesn't seem to fit in any class, really.

Definitely a mini max, with added sponsons under the hull. Super excited to try it out this summer!

Li'l Toy is correct, this is just a fun boat, not a race boat. Your speed will be limited by the prop availability for the motor you put on it, not the hull itself or any work to it.
