Finially was able to start the merc today, had a water leak so it only ran about 3 min.
Fixed that and backed back down to the ramp, it ran about 8 or 9 mins, when a big (short) rain storm came up..... back to the garage.
Looks like it has stopped now and I will be back out for a little more idle time before I run out for some low RPM cruises.
I am (for the first time ever) running thermostats, poppet valve and no diverters under the heads, it idles @ 10 to 15 lbs. water pressure, not sure I like that, and may remove all of that stuff, I will see how it does cruising.
Oh yea, I put clear Tygon hose between the lower and upper bearings, and only see a slight (mist?) of fuel/oil at idle and just above idle, should it be solid fuel, or only a mist?
Will it get to be more when cruising?
Sun is back out, time to run on the trailor some more!
Check back in a few!
ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!! ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!! ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

went for VERY short run, (below 3000) and with thermostat and poppet, 30 PSI water pressure guage, almost hit the peg, (from back side, 30-35 PSI??)
I guess I will remove both and try again with washers in thermostat housings.
Starboard side got warmer, (150-160) and that side was the only side to pee very hard, (with some steam), I guess when thermostat opened.
Port side just dribbled, and stayed cooler on guage.

another damn rain storm, will have to wait to see what difference the changes made.:mad:
The Merc shop manual, says nothing about running on the trailor at idle, all it says is to keep it under 2500-3500 for the first 2 hours????
Have I been babying my rebuilds for all this time??:confused:
I have heard from motocrossers, (dirt bikes) to break them in like your gonna run them, that can't be right?

Got WATER? With all this rain, the water press has gotta be high.:D It's starting to come out of my ears. That sounds real high, look for your problem. I don't have the patience to wait longer than 100 feet to mash it, what is break in time? :D

I've tried it all, poppet and thermostats,
no poppet with quarters with 1/8" holes, no poppet WITH thermostats, and nothing at all!!!!!!!!!!!
The only way I can get ANY heat is with poppet and thermostats, still starboard gets to about 150 and port only gets to 120.
BUT WATER PRESSURE IS INTO THE PEG AT 3000 RPM'S - WTF????
Water temp is 75 degrees
Should I try poppet and quarters??
Poppet and nothing????
Two piece exaust plate single style poppet cover, (no bleed hose)
no hose off of port side of exhaust plate.
Motor seems OK, but sounds kinda ragged below 3500,(hogged exhaust chest, no porting)

HELP
If nothing else, when I get through trying different stuff I may be able to help someone else!

When the poppet opens, it dumps into the exhaust housing.This can be restricted, or did you modify anything? When the themo's dump, it goes into the other side of the adapter, and cools the ehaust. if you have that just go out the piss hole it is too small and going to restrict too much. I have cut the spring, for less pressure and cut the poppet length so it can open more, for more flow. I also leave the themo's but drill a small hole in them, so they flow a small amount, but work like stock themo's:)

Dave,
Haven't modified anything, all completley stock. except for hogging the exhaust chest.
It's hard to believe that in 75 degree water temp that it runs so cold.
I can understand cutting the spring, but how do you cut the poppet length ?
Where do you drill the thermo's?

John, I cut the length of the poppet valve at the end where the screw go's in,just a small bit. I drill the themo's in the outter ring, less than 1/16 of an inch. That way, they pass water to the piss hose all the time. That also lets air out of the top. It sounds like you have good oil lines, Go back and look at 90 MPH, :D :D

"I have heard from motocrossers, (dirt bikes) to break them in like your gonna run them, that can't be right?"
Do yourself a favor and break it in right. There've been more outboard motors damaged by listening to motorcycle experts advice than any other single cause I can think of. The enviroments are totally different. Dirt bikes aren't run for substained periods at constant, high RPM's. They also don't have a steady supply of cold water flowing through them, and an outboard won't respond to the same port timing that works well in a bike with an individual cyl tuned exhaust and multiple gears in the transmission.

I took this afternoon and tomorrow off to try to straighten this to much water pressure/ to cold engine temp problem.
I will try shortening the poppet stem first, along with drilling the 1/16 holes in the thermostats as suggested.
I will run both poppet and thermo's and see what that brings.
(Ididn't realize I stole checkmate88's ITS ALIVE thread starter, sorry-mate!:(

I'm winning!
out of 11 posts on this thread, I have done 7 of them!
Went out again after drilling 1/16 holes in the thermostat bodies, and cutting about two coils off of the poppet spring.
Holes in thermo's did give better pee out of dump hoses, better to see that there is a flow.
water pressure at idle is about 12 psi or so now, temp will only get to about 120 degrees at idle.
(on trailor)
2500= 18 psi
3000= 20 psi
3500= 23 psi
4000=25 psi
not been above that yet.
still runs ragged between 2500 and 3500???
(or sounds rough)
cleans out after that.
Temps run (starboard) around 130-135
(port) around 120
This is the best so far.........still to cold?

Don't make me start a new thread, with a cooler title!:mad:
Its still the best yet, but the 1/16 holes in the thermo's plugged up in about 30 mins. and dump hoses went down to dribble again, there is not enough temp to make the thermo's open up, next I will try nothing in thermo housings with poppet, then quarters in thermo housings with 1/8 holes and with poppet.
What is left add DIALITHIUM CHRYSTALS????????:mad: :mad: :mad:
