Mercury has different categories of engine names (which used to correspond to the decals on a cowl and around the mid 90s this kinda faded) and once you select a category you get sub categories of serial ranges. This arrangement makes absolutely no sense when it comes to the racing engines because we call them things (like bridgeport, 260, 280 etc.) that do not show up in the EPC. So if someone says they have a 88 bridgeport and doesn't have a serial number you gotta know your s*** in order to figure out what serial range it came from. You have to know the things that changed and look at the motor and the EPC to see if you got the right schematic. I know **most** of the stuff now, but I was hoping we could all come together or you can point me to where someone has recorded the correspondence between hp or consumer terms and serial numbers/merc terms
Right now the categories are as follows:
2.4 (efi)
0A168043 & Below 7 (called 14) petal reeds 2pc heads updraft efi
0A168044 - 0B290009 7 petal reeds 2pc heads horn efi
0B290010 - 0C276917 7 petal reeds 1pc heads horn efi
2.4 (carb)
0C175045 & Up 5 petal reeds 1 pc heads slosh tubes on carbs
Mod-VP (efi)
0C276380 & Up (USA) at this point both bport and oval port were offered, right? chrome bore rated at 240 hp
Mod-VP (carb)
83B807 & Up 5 petal reeds 2 pc heads neither of these serial ranges show slosh tubes on carbs
0B290000 & Up 5 petal reeds first range introducing 1 pc heads
2.5 (carb)
0D030200 - 0D935270 245? were there any variances here that are notable?
0D935271 & Up 245? Both serial ranges show small upper crank bearing. What was the block stamping on these?
2.5 (efi)
0D030200 - 0D935270 260 small bearing LL block?
0D935271 - 0G366999 260 small bearing LL block?
0G367000 - 0G610238 260 big bearing PP block?
2.5 (efi/efi offshore)
0G367000 - 0G610238 big bearing are these more 260s, 300 drags???
0G610239 - 0G856999
2.5L (efi/efi offshore)
0G857000 - 0T999519 I know this one is a 280 and blocks were stamped QQ
Formula I (2L EFI) 12" mid
0A953232 - 0A953245 has a 260 style horn - 2.5 sleeved down to 2.0?
Mercury Formula I (carb) 12" mid
77J603 & Up vertical reed, 2 pc head, no slosh tubes - was this the 1750xs 1500xs?
Mercury Formula I (2L EFI) 12" mid
82E606 - 86G640 7 (called 14) petal reeds 2pc heads updraft efi and horn shown
Mercury XR2
0B290314 - 0C276429 5 petal vertical reeds, slosh tube carbs, 1 pc heads
Mercury Mariner XR2
0C276430 - 0D935270 5petal horizontal reeds, pumper carbs are these 2.4s or 2.5s?
0D935271 & Up 5petal horizontal reeds, pumper carbs
SST120 12" mid
0D030200 & Up LH rotation, small crank bearing, carb, 4 petal reeds - was this a 2.5 or 2.4 and what do we call it
S2000 12" mid
0D030200 & Up LH rotation, small crank bearing, carb, 4 petal reeds - was this a 2.5 or 2.4 and how is it different than the SST120
S3000 12" mid
0D181027 & Up LH rotation, EFI, 7 petal, 1" spacer, horn - is this a 300 drag SS block? I heard it was offered with the SVS at some time but that doesn't show up anywhere
I know I am trying to make sense of something that had no logic (mercury racing), but I think its worth a try. Where does the 300 drag fall in these categories like the standard RH rotation one that was offered on a 15" mid rather than the 12" S3000?
side note: Optis and ProMaxs can go to the scrapper and be forgotten
