Hi Y’all,

Those of you who has been on here for a while might remember my triple Monty powered Scarab 34SS. Well, two of the engines was sold and I was left with one engine, all the wiring, steering, gauges, etc etc. So I have been looking for a hull suitable for the parts that I have. I ended up with a Glastron CVX20. Picked it up in Cincinnati, but the boat is from Colorado. The beauty of it is that it is unmolested, all original, and complete. The not so good part is that all the wood is rotten, so I am doing a full restomod. It will be painted silver/white, with white interior. I will keep the look somewhat original, but coosa will replace all the wooden pieces and the stringers/transom will be modded to handle the OMC V8 with 400+ HP. Anyways, the boat is here, the hull and deck are split, and the rebuild is about to commence.

I always liked that hull. I like the color combination of your boat. One of my buds is redoing a hull just like that. He's going to do the boat in candy apple red with a 200 merc on it

My Dad bought a 1977 Outboard w1977 200 Evinrude the same color your going to paint yours. Beautiful boat. My advice would do do yourself a favor and fassion some sort of running pad on the sharp V keel.

The mid section I received for free from the guy who bought my two Monty motors. I disassembled it and sent it all in for powder coating. I now have a spare 25” mid, and a 30” mid. Here it is being reassembled:

But you will need a 16" or 20"

That is a 20”. I’m doing it right man..... It will also have a Bob’s Versajack back there to adjust while underway.

Cool project! I like that crane too, I've never seen someone build something like that. Looks like it comes in handy.

Looks like a fun project!

A side note;
I've had every flavor of cv and cvx. The 20 with a merc 225 3 liter is a handful at 70. Your gonna want to consider adding a pad or something. You definitely need single side hydro steering.

Have fun!

It will get side hydraulic steering, but I haven’t decided on what to do with the bottom yet. As is, its perfect for skiing and I would hate to screw that up. With 430HP I doubt much of that bottom will see water at WOT regardless so I’m not sure. The bottom will be painted white Awlgrip so easy to modify and cover up later on if it doesn’t work as is...

Pad

Please elaborate. I have done some research, but will be more than happy to hear what my S&F brothers/sisters has to add. How wide? How long? Completely flat? Negative? Transition to the pad how?

This concaved one worked really well for us 11" at the transom. There was a step built in after the transition. This was designed by Doug Wright and Todd D. on a napkin at dinner- built out of awlfair (no wood to rot)....

Don't know your dead rise but have wood shop cut two strips of wood to match your dead rise giving you a flat level surface to attach a 3/4 to 1 inch strip on top to be your pad where you will have high compression giving you lots of lift cutting friction 7 to 10 inches.

Very forgiving and stayed on the pad at all times above 30 mph. It was built to be my son's first trainer boat.

Joe's concave never saw that before
...cuda...you were evidently never a slalom water skier in your youth...haha... o'brien, maharaja, saucier, etc. slalom water ski's all had the same concave designs with the big aluminum skegs with holes drilled through them. this is where pipkorn derived the idea from. they tracked excellent. all us water bugs in junior high & high school would use a dato blade on the shop class's table saw making our own custom laminated wood slalom ski's for summer time. time machine required...;)

Awesome replies. I have plenty of Awflair available, but think the main structure will be coosa, epoxied to the bottom. I really like the concave pad, as that is what I I’m thinking will work the best.

...this is a photo of a 39' velocity hull plug that was tooled, but a mold was never pulled from it, nor a hull produced, but is a nice example of another nice pad bottom design...https://www.thehulltruth.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=722972&stc=1&d=1473357436

I beg to differ I had some gorgeous Connelly inlay mahogany skis

concave has been around for ever, I just never saw Joe's Bondo special

When I was 15 my brothers 1964 Triumph was passed on to me most of the rocker panels were rusted away so I balled up newspaper to fill the hole then covered with a few gallons of Bondo, the beginning of things:cheers: to come.

I like to make them squeal

To go thru all that and not build a mold?

That 39 looks like the 22;) just longer

Check out Ron's build on his Glastron. He added a pad and runs it with a 2.5 Merc. Page two outlines how he added the pad.

And another picture of a pad hull.

Cool project you have going. Here is the pad I added to a 17' V, it might help you. Dead flat raised pad as opposed to a delta pad approach.

And here is the pad on another boat I have a 23 footer. In my opinion, if your hull is going to be multi-use and your glass man is masterful, I'd strongly suggest you add a couple of degrees of deadrise in any raised pad you settle on to make it a bit more forgiving.

Wow, great great replies, thanks a million. I have a pretty good idea of how to solve this pad.

Question two: The 27 gallon fuel tank was located up front under the deck and I'm sure that's great for skiing, but not sure if its good for stability at high speed. 27 gallon is far from enough for a Monty motor and I am playing with the idea of using two tanks in the rear instead. Opinions?

Cool project !
I'm doing a structural restoration on a 21 Checkmate Starflite that may get one of my V8s so I'm looking at many of the same issues.
I'm leaning towards a supplemental belly tank that would be used when the extra range is needed (which might be most of the time lol). I plan to have a small transfer pump to fill the main tank from the belly tank. I don't mind losing my in-floor ski locker, not sure if the CVX-20 had one or not.

Thank you Sir!. The fuel tank issues has been solved if I can get the welder to do it. Two saddle tanks in the back with a 4" pipe welded in between them will fulfill the requirement of the coastguard. The knees that I am putting in made out of coosa will prevent any other option, but I think the pipe will do. I will then move 3 34 size batteries up to the front and we should be all good weight wise. I have decided to make the pad 16" wide, and 7' long. It should give the boat the ability to run with the best as well as continuing to be a nice ski boat with the keel it has forward.
