When the Throttle Plate is closed, the slider attaching stud should be at the forward end of the slot in the slider. If it is not, loosen allen screws on throttle arm and adjust. Make sure throttle plate is closed and the idle stop screw is against the stop. Tighten allen screws.

What does this do for the way the motor grabs RPM? It is better for the timing to adv some before the throttle plate opens?
Thankyou Skydog:D

Synchronizes the timing advance with opening of the throttle.

" It is better for the timing to adv some before the throttle plate opens?"

Yes, definately. If you don't believe it, disconnect the rod and start opening the butterfly without timing advance and see what a dog it it. All the Merc race engines with non shiftable gearcases (Speedmasters) run the timing at full advance all the time. The acceleration is better that way, but the engines will run way fast if a shiftable gearcase is used and it's cranked in neutral. I haven't ever tried taking the slide out of the system, but if it gets advance and throttle at the same time I'd think the low end would suffer, based on my experience with some boggy old carb motors that the pickups were out of whack on.
