I am putting a 2.5 on a Hydrostream Volero YT, and there ain't much (any) room for the Trim Pump to mount Veritical. Can and will these work properly if mounted sideways, or flat on the bottom of the boat?

Greg,
You shouldn't mount them sideways because of the way the oil pickup is for the pump. Also, if the seal in the motor is questionable, it would make it very easy for oil to get in there. I wouldn't do it.

You could change to a low profile plastic reservoir like this one. Bobs or Rics should have one. This is not that good of a pic, but the Bobs Jackplate pump is identical to my Merc trim pump except the reservour. It is retained by a single screw through the bottom of the reservoir. The plastic one is about 3 or 4 in shorter than the standard reservoir and way easier to check and fill.

change just the reservoir, you have to change the pick-ups too, and at that point you may as well change the whole pump.

Isn't the pump with the plastic reservoir just the standard Mercuriser trim pump? It should be fairly easiy to find one of those if it will work for you application.
BTW, the high perf pump requires the fill to be backed off 1 1/2 turns for ventilation, so even if you could get the pump to work sideways, all of the oil will eventually come out.

Steve from Ill had one posted for sale a while back.
I had some real tight space constraints n my Allison when mounting both trim pump and inboard hydl plate pump. I found some 90 degree fittings which allowed me to save several inches on otherwise area used up by the hoses leaving the pumps. With the 90 degree fittings I could run my hoses more conviently.
