This accident happened last Friday in a nearby lake. The pilot was flying in jerry jugs of diesel to a camp site. (No passengers). This is a Beaver (bush plane) with "amphibs". That means there are retractable wheels in the floats. One biggie is you DON'T land on the water with your wheels down or this WILL happen. No one was hurt. This lake has no road acess so a helicopter will have to be flown in from another town to lift it out. One wing broke off, the other is swept back, and there is a oil sheen covering the three mile lake. Last fall the same pilot landed a smaller bush plane (185 on amfib floats) on a runway with his wheels up. He ground the $40,000 floats down to the ribs. Needless to say, he is now unemployed. He has 20,000 hours of flying in bush planes. Makes you go,"Hummmmmmmmmm".

It amazes me that incorrect selection of landing gear is such a common thing. Checkilsts are made just for this sort of thing, but you can't rule out a faulty light or selector. I suppose landing gear in that sort of configuration wouldn't make much extra noise or drag, so you probably wouldn't notice it? Sure wouldn't be able to see them under the floats.
My instructor taught me to look at the shadow of the plane on the ground as I was landing to check gear down, works sometimes, but not on water! LOL!

This one was white and purple. I don't know the N#'s. It was absolutely immaculate . I've been on these planes and there are four green and four red LED lights. One for each wheel. The guy just overlooked these blinding lights shining in his eyes. Divers sunk it, flipped it over and raised it over the weekend. Just waiting for a logging helicopter to come over from a nearby town and haul it back. I'll try to get pictures when it 's back in town.

I absolutly love those planes. lol My grandpa test flew them and my great grandpa used them in the bush. De Havillands use to loan them to grandpa all the time. They used to fly up to the cottage about 3 times a summer. I love boats but im afraid a Beaver pulling up to the dock is just a little bit cooler:D
AlaskaStreamin I assume youve seen you fair share living where you do haha

Is there away to knowing if your wheels are retracted or extended on these type planes. Or are you at the mercy of your own equipment.
