Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the outboard world and have a 26ft JC tritoon with a mariner 175. I believe the engine to be a mid 90's model, but cannot verify with the serial number that is half missing. I need to replace the powerhead, because the #6 cylinder has a burned up piston. If I was to stay with this vintage outboard, are there any easy upgrades I can do to get extra hp. I want to be in the 225hp range if possible. I do know the carbs are the wmh models, so I am not sure if there are any changes I can make there, but any help would be appreciated.

Also, I am considering upgrading to a newer Mercury 225 or 250hp with fuel injection and would like to know what models and years are more desirable.

My overall goal is to have a cruising speed around 26-30mph with a top end around 40mph.

Thanks for your help.

Ur gonna want the 3.0 225 250 , especially for tritoon. The 2.5 won't have the grunt down low , and if u did modify the 2.5 for more hp , u will loose hole shot power. Modified motors like to turn hi rpm for peak power

Thanks for the input. I should be able to purchase a used takeoff in the 2000-2005 year range. Are there any common problems with these outboards? From what I have read, they are a solid motor just a bit thirsty. I'm used to running big blocks in ski boats, so I'm used to thirsty.

Depending on which motor u find u want. Post on here about pros and cons , if its a opti then ur gonna wanna see where the compressor has been replaced

There's a lot of Tritoon in my area with a Yamaha 250 225 200. Merc 200 250 300 & a few twins in both manufactures. They run really Good. SIP fuel. That's best part:cheers:
