Very cool little boats but I wish that those pictures had composite materials instead of all the wood.

I will be excited to see the finish work on this one "the Bullet is nothing short of an impressive job".

I agree, defiantly not my first choice of materials, but if done right and properly taken care of will last quite a long time.

Is there a reason for not coring the entire bottom ?
Also for not doing a the transom all in one piece ?
I'm not a boat builder by any means, just curious

Only the running surface and the tunnel on these have been cored from the beginning and held up great not sure why I assume it adds enough stiffness that it's not warented. The transom on the other hand is not flat across it's almost rounded that's why they used more than one piece of Marine ply.

It would be cool to have a wing plate water jetted and utilize a side ram on this rig "looks like you could use the lower studs.

If I did that I could have eliminated the need for the shaft to be bored out and used the stock sst60 swivel shaft as i would not have needed the arm on it for the steering ram to bolt to thats the ,main reason why I wanted to use a side ram.. It would also eliminate the clearance issue im running into with the sst cowling pan touching the bolt and the hydro steering ram arm.

TwzteD
12-11-2020, 09:57 PM
Yea to make it legal for them to cover their ass, typically it would go under the floor but I'm not doing a floor since it's cored so i took it out. Only removed 20lbs unfortunately but not going to sweat it. I weighed everything today... Boat hull weighed 435lbs, significantly heavier than I anticipated since I was told it would weigh around 350 but it's very well laid up and it's still lighter than my bullet was and this boat is massive in comparison to the bullet in terms of space and size being only 3" longer. It's really a big boat for a 13 footer. 6ft3in wide with a cockpit of over 5 ft wide and 6ft long..The sides transom freeboard etc. are a lot taller than the 13ft bullet. My wife already likes it a lot better so I'm off to a good start. The SST60 with pro 50 Trim assembly came in at right around 190lbs.. that's light for a 95hp engine, people seem to falsify weight like speeds for whatever reason but I prefer to keep it real. Here's some pictures of the weights I got today.

Got trailer finished, boat on trailer, drilled transom and started to mock up engine. I ordered some transom wedges but may also need to cut the clamp brackets off the trim assembly as it hits the jackplate. I need the come down them extra 2 holes it's preventing me of doing so.

I cut the clamp brackets off as they hit the jack plate but now run into clearance issues with the steering arm, may either need to go with a side ram steering or add more setback, I did order some wedges for negative trim so will see if that gives me the clearance I need or not. I put a level on the sponsors and a piece of angle to the gear case as it sits with the clearance issues I have the prop shaft or the tip of the bullet will be roughly 2 in above the bottom of the sponson Not sure if that will be low enough for the lowest setting with the jack plate all the way down, I will be running a sponson water pickup so I'm not concerned about getting enough water Just issues with getting on plane I know it's a tunnel so naturally the gear case will be higher but will have to see if it works or not. I can go down one more hole if I'm able to get the clearance I need for the steering arm which will drop about an inch.

Haven't posted in a while with this build but have made some decent progress. I got all the engine painted, mounted temporarily, got the back seat completely made and dropped everything off to the upholster. Made a custom trim mouth for the paddles, and glassed over all the bare wood in the boat, sanded it all ready for gelcoat. I got the power head back from Monty and wanted to hear it run for the first time.

Honestly not really sure I know they make around 85 horsepower stock and finger ports supposedly add about 10 to 15 so if I had to guess somewhere between 95 and 100 horsepower. Some people claim they can make up to $115 horsepower but I've never seen any dyno results in person so I can't say it's true. The benefit of this motor is it only weighs 190 lb with the cowling.

TwzteD

I haven't updated here lately so figured I would. Haven't really had any video footage of the boat running just doing a lot of testing. Still needs more but Have switched gears, went from 1.86 to 1.78 and boat didnt care for it but i kept everything else the same. didnt try any other props, I lost 400rpm and 4-5 mph in the process. I also have an Porpoising issue at higher speed. Before the gear change i was getting 69-70mph and 8100 rpm. after im getting 65-66 at 7600 rpm. heres a few videos. trimming up dont help just gets lighty like the last video, and jacking the engine up don't either just blows out the prop and i loose steering. The sponsons have hooks on the bottom, i shaved off 1/8th inch off the very back but i still have to fill around 1/8 more that may help. I have a 60r on order should be here in a few weeks, I have a small case for it not the big 2.33 case, going to swap off the sst60 and put it on a stand to use in a future "project" and dial in the 60r and use it as a family boat it works very well for that!

Twisted, I'm not an expert on this but it seems like your making too much power for the prop. Could the porpoising be caused by lack of bite from the prop and as it slips the bow lift falls and the process repeats itself over and over?

Jimboat

I also have an Porpoising issue at higher speed.

Perhaps adjust engine height to change susceptibility to porpoising?

Taking hook away will not help. It's there to prevent porpoise by the builders design. You might try some weight fwd to help move the c/e fwd.

TwzteD
08-25-2021, 10:15 AM
I spoke with Mike Biel, They revised the design last year in the mold lavy craft extended the sponsons, The hooks are not supposed to be there Mike said they should be dead flat but they were not able to do so in the mold for whatever reason. They were supposed to fix them on my boat before I acquired it but there was a few flaws that got missed before the boat got picked up and delivered to me. Mike worked with me through that however he did tell me the fill the sponsors in because they are designed to be dead flat there was almost a quarter inch hook in them from the very back part to about two feet forward of that. I figured I will fill them in and see what happens worst case scenario I can add like a pencil roll to the back of the sponsor if needed later on down the road.

I really want to try a chopper style prop just to see how it reacts problem is finding them in smaller diameters is really hard to do there are just none out there The prop I have now I had a good amount of cupping added to it It's a send me Cleaver
.. I am in the process of having a SRX cut down I also have a four blade which may help with the extra bow lift. Mike said most of the time these boats perform best with choppers. They like the added bowel lift so you can keep the trim as low as possible.

It runs pretty good with the 60r I still have a porpoise around 50-55 havent found a prop that can hold the bow up, I'm going to try 4 more inch of set back and see how it likes it. Choppers in the size I need are impossible to find. One of the best props the boat likes is a PowerTech SRD 3 but it is small highest pitch is 17p and it's almost instantly on the limiter the 19p raptor similar to the Yamaha drag prop works decent and is on of the faster props but it's to small too and just don't have that bite to keep the bow up. Hopefully setback helps. If there is 6"-1ft chopp and a head wind it don't matter what prop is on it packs enough air it just flys real nice and smooth but those conditions do t always present them selves especially on rivers. I think part of the problem I'm having is that my engine is slightly under powered and light for the hull, when they removed that 4" notch in the sponsons on the newer boats I'm not getting that leverage it needs. That and the small diameter props with less blade to grab and lift.

Did you resolve the porpoise?

Yes, adding setback helped significantly. These boats used to have setback built into the sponsors, but the notch was filled in when they revised the molds with heavier motors. It seems to not have an issue, but since I have a lighter motor than most I needed to add more setback.

Best I got out of the 60r on this boat was 58, I have since swapped it to a Yamaha 90, not much testing but it's already faster with a passenger and the engine buried. The boat is not light like a race layup hull it weighed around 420lbs bare hull with nothin in it but built well and will hold up to rough water that is around here.

Only been able to test 1 out of the 5 props I have, and it was the smallest, 61 at 6600 rpm so I think there's room for improvement, not as fast as the sst60 but its definitely more reliable for me and has more torque. Not the fastest boat but it's got a full interior and 2 10-gal fuel tanks and can tote 4+ people to the sand bar, so its respectable for a 13' IMO but I think I can do better, we will see.

Any updates? I saw on Hill's eBay page that they make a chopper that fits your gearcase:
