View Full Version : Fabricate nose cone?

I searched everywhere and aside from a few guys who sand cast their own nose cones I didnt see any fabricated ones, why not? Seems easy enough to shape and weld up one out of 1/8" aluminum plate. I got to thinking about this because the land and sea LWP I have seems a little too large for my V4 lower unit. Doesnt look like theres much option for a good V4 cone so.... fabricate time? It seems odd to me that I couldnt find anyone who had already done this. Hence this thread

Bob's makes an "inline" size cone that will fit the V4 pretty good. Here's the fabricated cone for my 18 hp Evinrude project:

475399

The pickup is pretty high due to the split case housing. Half the reason is that the original water pickup out back had to be cut off for prop clearance!

your idea is a good one... would be a good project... I myself would like to make my own cone for my 3 cylinder motor as here in the uk we dont have any where that sells them , they can order but the prices then are astronomical due to postage customs and taxes.... ive seen a few people make there own cones from epoxy type materials and have has some very good success and use these at pretty high speeds ( 70mph to me is pretty high speed for a 3 cylinder omc 56. here is a look at how one particular one I know off being made up and end product... as you can see he first done one, then decided to do another with a low water pick up. the results are very good and these are not my pics but a fella called Jani Hupiveneilijä Ravantti (https://www.facebook.com/hupiveneilija.ite?fref=gm&__tn__=%2Cd-_-R&eid=ARAttccD7dDlP2hhEX4zo1U2SXS15EYWDL0q6v1k7S9FGThMwisYsF9rxJMGpfXW6U260BW7fx7Xz3fD&dti=1545817415730476&hc_location=group)....

I have a 2cylinder 60 with the small gearcase a nose cone would be great and a speed prop for this motor both l have had no luck finding either.

Props can be cut to size and re-hubbed to suit your output shaft but the face of the prop with regard to the thrust washer and whatnot may also need to be customized and machines. It’s really more about the diameter limits your lower unit can clear, because the rest of the parameters can be modded to fit.

I like the idea of casting a cone with epoxy I think that could work quite well. I was also thinking by fabricating one it would be easier to control the length which is an issue with smaller power motors due to drag and whatnot. This build I’m putting together should run in the 70’s and that’s pretty much the wall for needing lwp or not. I think even if I lost a mph or two if I surface the prop the handling and chine walk will be much better and worth the effort.

I have a raker and a bunch of Merc props I may cut and re-hub a chopper. All sounds like fun that’s for sure

Great job on the nosecone. I appreciate the time and effort that you put into that and how it came out. I find it much more rewarding than just going out by or something. Great job

I did one back about 1980.... body pudy.... shaped like a hydromotive.......Hit something hard and it stayed on, only small chip off of it.

that was not my work on the nose cone, its janni's work and I too think he done a great job.. its holding up well and his boat is flying .

So whats the best choice for a cone on a V4? Bobs inline? Or has someone found a better option?

Mazco sells a slim cone apparently that fits the v4 lower the best. Bobs inline also fits ok from what I’ve read. No personal use on either yet

I dont see anything on their website

I was researching and saw some comments on it. They don’t advertise it but sell ( or at least sold ) them called mazcone. Give em a ring and see

My present model. Works really good.

Was that store bought or did you fab it? Does it give you bow lift? Is it low water pick-up or just nose cone. thanks Rick

Its self made w/lwpu. I wanted it to behave quite neutral, because we run most often on a rough water. So it dont push down, just go through.

Older thread but will add my 2 cents worth.
For v6 motors I use some sort of internal structure to build the nose cone on.
The equivalent in the States would be a Bob's.
This is because it needs to stay in place in a turn if it hits something at high speed.
For me on a race circuit this is all about safety.
For small motors like 30hp racing which I do also, I see it as acceptable to cast polyester (reinforced bog) straight onto the gearbox.
On these small engines I don't include a Low Water Pickup in the cone but use a transom mounted pickup feeding the pump.
The trick is to prepare the Aluminium well.
I use a 36 grit sanding disc to key the bullet then butter the bullet with polyester bog.
Then a pre prepared cardboard or plastic witches hat shaped mold is filled with bog and held in place until set.
This is not an easy task.
The bog needs to be packed into the mold so that there are no air cavities.
Much easier said than done.
Once done, this forms the main shape of the cone that is then added to and finish shaped.
Done well, they dont514824 come off.
My experience has been that polyester adheres to aluminium much better than epoxy does so if a cone is to be made from epoxy then a butter layer of polyester is used on the Aluminium.

Ron Hill is 15,000 miles from my place.
If I was going to make one with a integral LWP it would be of the Terminator type.514831

I hit a submarine log and ask if anyone has swept asporty, I'm not completely done but I have been working on it, boat is over a100, Noone responded as I ask if anyone had done it before

A Racing friend of mine is planning needle point cone on a small vee bottom race boat (30)hp.
We both also run V6 circuit boats.
I don't use needle points as I believe that they don't behave well in turns.
He is an ex FI tunnel driver and reckons that needle point is ok on a fast vee bottom boat?

if your max speed is not near or over its a waste of time.

Ever thought about 3D aluminium printing!
I have no idea about the cost or if it would be possible to start printing on a gearcase or seperate cone to be glued on
That is also something i would like to try but getting the right compagny would be a search
