After my last pass and pulling onto the trailer, I smelled that distinct gear oil smell but didn't see anything. When I got home I saw this. I remember Helmut's 2.5 Sportmaster did this once from a little hole on the starboard side and it turned out to be normal. My PM 300 Sportmaster does not have the little hole in the same place as the 2.5, instead it appears there is a hole right at the seam between the midsection and the gearcase. Is this my vent? Is it normal for oil to come out like this?
The shift shaft seal is leaking.

Thanks for the reply. What's it take to fix that?
You can get a newguide with the seal in it and unscrew the out one. Try not to pull uot the shaft.

I haven't had to take the gearcase off this motor yet, so I'm not familiar with it. Can it be changed right from the top after the case is removed from the midsection? Is it part # 15 in this diagram? When you say guide, are you referring to # 14? Apparently there is a kit for this seal.
What I'm asking is, this is a simple repair right? It's not going to require pulling the whole gearcase apart?

Yes it is the seal.It also comes with the sleeve and o-ring too.#14 It's easier than changing the seal.
