Mercury Mod VP Lower Unit

I have an unused, never been assembled housing for a mid 80s Mod VP. The one with the water intake just above the nosecone in order to be APBA legal. I want to put it together in hopes of someday getting the rest of the parts for a complete Mod VP motor. I know the gears from any gearcase of that vintage would/should work, but any pros and cons to what I should put it together with?
