blew out on my old 1750 2.0 Merc(further reinforcing me to check everything before heading out). About 3/4 of it from the front back is gone. Last run of the day noticed a vibration. Slowed down and drove it straight to the ramp. With the gasket gone the front studs were loose. I replaced that gasket 2 years ago when I did my mounts. Can't remember if it was a factory Merc gasket or not. Is it possible to replace this gasket without pulling the powerhead? Think I've seen a picture of it done before. Would it be too wuch strain on my upper solid mounts? I was thinking of supporting the powerhead. Like to avoid seperating the plates if possible. What make of gasket you guys recomend? I think my mistake was putting silicone on the gasket.

If your lower motor mount bolts are turned around so they can be pulled out, (opposite from the way merc put them in) then you can pull the mid only.
I would support the powerhead with the lifting ring though.

Thanks Waterwings. I recall My friend and I wondering why Merc put those bolts in like that when we changed the mounts last time. Pretty sure I recall seeing only bolt heads and not nut and threads on the lower yoke. I guess I'll find out when I get home. How much room do I need under the lower unit to drop it?

Yup, I was lucky. I was thinking the whole drive (550 km) home what it could be. I checked over every bolt on the jack plate and steering then noticed the gasket peeling out. I sent you an email.

GLEN,
It may be easier to take the L/U off, weight wise and length wise.
Unless you can snake the gasket around the water pickup tube, you will have to drop the mid all the way down past the tube.
It will also help if you need to scrape any gasket.

You can also get away with just taking off the "C" clip at the bottom of the steering pivot where it's splined instead of taking off the engine mounts. Lower unit removal would ease the whole situation tremendously. Like WATERWINGS said, support the powerhead.
Good luck. :D

Thanks for the tips guys. I thought of that C-clip idea but noticed when I got home that bolt head is on the yoke side so I'll be OK. I'll remove the lower unit first then the mid as you guys sujest.

Is there an easy way?
