View Full Version : Water cooled regulator 2.4 charging system question

I've had the boat on the water 4 times, bought it with a dead battery. Charged and load tested the battery, seemed to be fine. Last trip home the boat wouldn't re-start at the ramp, completely dead. It felt a little funny while it was running, but voltmeter in boat was always over 13v, tach has been acting funny the whole time (which I know from my other motor is a symptom of a bad regulator).

Charged the battery today, ohm tested stator and regulator as per the manual, both pass static testing. Fired up the boat, voltage went from 12.4 to 12.9 at idle, runs 13.9-14.1 at 1000 rpm. Inspected flywheel magnets, all good. So do I have a questionable battery? Or a charging system that doesn't work properly hot? I have never seen the voltmeter dip below 13 while running, which is why I'm asking, I was already thinking I would be replacing the stator and regulator, but they seem fine?

Thanks guys.

Have you looked at/cleaned the battery terminals and the battery cable connections on the motor? The system might be running 13v but the battery might only be getting 10v.

Yes I have. My last run was pretty rough, a lot of cruiser wakes. I'm wondering if I have a questionable battery that didn't like the ride. The first 3 runs were flawless, besides the tach jumping around.

get tha battery load tested... get rid of tha water cooled stuff if ya gonna keep tha motor.... jmo

That's the direction I'm headed in. Just want to rule one out over the other, if the charging system is working I'll just replace the battery, or vice versa. I'll run it when I can and continue my troubleshooting, will confirm battery condition at work thru the week

That watercooled regulator is junk! Start the workaround today!

Exactly right. Mine literally caught on f'ING FiRE!!!! Make the change!

Are you 88-90 2.4? 40 amp or have you swapped to 16?

That motor is long gone, think it was an 89 something......16amp has always been plenty of charging!
