I recently bought a 17’ action marine with a 200 mercury on it am looking to do the exhaust and from what am told it’s a lot different from doing it on a mercury from my old super boat with a Johnson so if I could get some clear directions I would appreciate it

What do you mean by “do the exhaust”? Drill the can? Remove the liner? Open up the adapter? Hog out the chest?

You talking about drilling it to make it loud?

Ya I'm guessing making it loud , what people.dont understand is if u do that u loose slip to it prop and can kill hole shot, but can also make it better but only if u have good gole.shot b4 the mod

Yes make it louder lol feel like it sounds better to say exhaust but if can’t without causing damage I won’t

What ever is suggested that won’t cause damage

Yank the can and it will sound a lot meaner. Drill it and you might make it weak. If you GOT to have it loud, get an offshore mid.

If you drill thru the bottom like in post pic you will be fine you won't weaken it that it would break..been done for decades.
If you want to get an actual snout add(not the crappy one) on you can send mid out and get it done he will also sell just the snout if you can do welding etc.
This is an evinrude mid but you get the idea..

Ok as soon as the site let's me post a pic..nit sure why no pics will upload..ok it's not me something wrong with site and loading pics

But here's link https://www.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?349315-Evinrude-OMC-looper-offshore-mid-exhaust-mod-by-Michael-Chapman&p=3192480#post3192480

:D Hey the louder the more HP and faster they run.....;):nonod:
Funny thing I'm removing my 15" motors on my RS and installing 20" silent night motors. After all these years running O/S stuff the wife's keeps yelling at me, you do not hear correctly and I yell back WHAT...:D
All kidding aside. I can no longer stand next to a 260/280 O/S running on the hose, pitch kills me...:(

that "someone" is pretty much right.. ya not gonna change tha sound and NOT pull tha power head ta do it..

remove tha can?.. gotta pull tha PH..

drill tha down housing?.. gotta pull tha PH..

but i have seen some pretty stupid attempts at it... one really stood out.. drilled two 1 1/2" holes thru tha down housing AND can......

one that use ta be done a lot was drillin' a coupla 1" hole in tha gear case.. it works (to an extent) but jus never was in favor of it....

Peppaceno, listen to the guys above if you plan on doing correctly. You need an 18" X 1/2" drill bit to do it nicely and not struggle
Picture below is how they came drilled from Mercury, 5 holes per side.
Drilled this way will give you your desired sound and I have never seen one crack unless you hit a log or telephone pole....:D

Old School. Drilling and opening the exhaust with can removal does improve performance slightly. Idles quiet if its drilled just above the cavitation plate. You have to check your jetting if you want the most out of it. A chocolate brown plug color is probably best . If its light grey or white re jet at least one to two sized richer. Adding an exhaust tuner maxes that all out. Be sure the tuner is in before you check plug readings. Mercury would not have a high performance tuner if they did not work. You won't see a tremendous gain in a heavy boat but lighter ones respond better. Keep in mind that every modification made in an engine is attached to something else. The engine is an air pump. I flow port my reed cages and use Boyeson dual stage reeds. This along with the exhaust actually does help noticeably. Be sure to re install reeds with red lock tite on the screws. Some guys who misunderstand things on a higher level then I may not agree bu all the race boats have relieved exhaust.
