picked up a 83' shadow from another member on here. boats in great shape for its age but I picked up a 250xs for it. but had a soft floor and transom was shot. so boat is at a local reputable fiberglass shop getting new floor, stringers, transom dash etc and then paint. having a new tank made as well. will post as I progress. picked up a side ram steering setup as well. will be running a 12' jack plate. heres some pics so far of the progress. boat had a lot of gelcoat issues so im having it painted. new interior as well. I will be doing all the rigging. going with a simrad display for gauges. will be having the plash well deleted as well.

Are you gonna limit the ability to tilt your engine up with no well?

got some more updates. transoms in, total of 3" thick(ply). back deck is glassed on. wanted to do a hatch but the additional cost was out of reach. im already spending quite a bit on this resto so gotta cut costs somewhere. maybe ill put a sunpad on. ill proabably maken access from behind the bench seat. the guys at D&S marine in Rockford are doing a amazing job. very nice guys and update me often. Tank and floor will go in this week then its paint prep. picking up jack plate from powder coat today and sending my injectors to brucato to be rebuilt. anyone have anymore pics of shadows?

Gotta love the balsa core stringers! Floor and transom were balsa also, all rotted. Core is good luckily.

Few pics I got sent. Stringers some floors in seat boxes being made then glassing it all in. Everything full encapsulated

Few pics of stringer system. All new transom, knee boards, stringers, bulkheads and tank. Built same as factory design but much stronger and more waterproof. No balsa used other than deck. Boat should be getting paint next week!

I added two extra knees to my transom when I redid my shadow. Is easy to do. Just come outboard of the factory knees 14 to 16 inches on each side and you can add in another series of supports.

Boats getting prepped for paint. Seat boxes and Rae bench bulkhead is in. Floor is fullly glassed. Seat boxes have aluminum plate sandwiched between ply that will be tapped for bolts.

Well after a week of grinding and what not I finally got floor and bilge coated. Just spent my time making sure any holes were filled and boat was bone dry throughout. Still need to sand the floor and topcoat it for UV protection. This boat will be much better than it was from the factory no doubt. The whole dash core was replaced. Itís a clean slate. Time to start rigging

That's a really lightweight. neat looking ladder. I haven't seen one like that before. What make/model, or is it custom?

Also, just want to mention that this thread has been great to read, thanks for sharing. I've been debating between a Superboat, Progression, Challenger, and Shadow for my next purchase, and I think this thread alone has convinced me that I want a Shadow.

I'm guessing you're running that on the Chain O' Lakes in northern IL? That will be a great time running it there

thanks man. Yep I live on the chain so mostly will be rippin around here. The ladder is by r&r designs. Itís a slide master jackplate and I bought them together but it looks like it was built for it because one side of the jack plate has a shorter bolt plate to leave room for the ladder mount. The ladder slides down and then you can fold it down again also. So it goes about 2 feet below the bottom of the boat when all the way down

Love your thread for this project. I just picked up a Scorpion 21 Offshore, an 89 that I will restore over the winter as well. Pretty much a splash of a Shadow, Progression, Superboat. One quick question..... are you installing the fuel tank with foam? I hate that product, sucks water like a sponge but wondering how to safely keep it intact.

Managed to get a little done. I THINK I finally am done drilling holes. I took the time to epoxy coat any exposed core where I drilled wholes for cleats bilges etc. I want this thing to last and Iím not skipping any details. Also got the top coat on the floor interior epoxy. Gloss white. Sherwin williams macropoxy 646 and then their industrial enamel HS for a UV resistant top coat. Not cheap stuff but Itís worth it. Should be getting all my cables and steering in soon and seats. Also seadek down on the floor.

The seats have a metal insert on each corner side. The brackets bolt to those, and I just bolted those to the plate I have glasses under the seat boxes.
it came on sliding brackets but I plan I making solid mounts once I get a feel for where I want the seat to be

Pepperson4
12-22-2020, 01:48 PM
What made you decide on ETEC for power?
Talked to a bunch of people that loved them. Wanted something with a long warranty. Still have 8 years on this motor. Brp is still making parts and is a multi billion dollar company so I have no doubt they will honor warrantyís. Also wanted something with a clean rigging setup. This is just battery cables, and a harness and fuel line. No oil tank in boat, no shift cables to mess with. Rigging tube is fixed as well so that wonít wear out. And the icing on the cake is I can hit a button and switch between hand or foot throttle

Greg G

Switch between hand and foot? Super slick, did not know that. Agree on warranty.

Been tinkering with the floor layout. Always wanted to see how good I could make some seadek look. Tried clear
Plastic first but it was a pain in the ass. Saw the cardboard strips and hot glue idea on YouTube and it works amazing. Lays down just like the Mat will and has same thickness. And it’s rigid so no wrinkles. Will be routering the edges after templates are cut out. Went with 2 tone dark gray/black Teak style.

Pepperson4
01-22-2021, 01:00 AM
Got the first set of mats cut out. Will be adding other pieces on the angled sides of floor. Used a 45 degree mat cutter for a bevel with a straight edge. Came out pretty clean as long as your steady. I free handed the curves and circle. Just need to round the corners off. Also got a few other changes coming 👿

Your supposed to change your dash core every 6 months right? Haha was feeling ambitious and I hate how high the steering wheel was and the dash size. So I chiseled out all the core by hand and am recor-ing it to how I want it. Wish I would just leave stuff alone sometimes 😂

Pepperson4
01-25-2021, 04:35 PM
Core is cut out and in. Using all epoxy resin. Was able to trace the rear skin as my template. Using 3/4 ď ply. Tapered all my edges inside and out for the new skins. Used epoxy thickened with cabosil to bond core on. Used clamps where I could snd existing holes I used screws. Was able to get a good squeeze as you can see from all the excess epoxy everywhere. Filled any gaps with thickened epoxy. Bottom of dash (back side) has a radius sanded in to it. I will use 1708 for front skin first and overhang it by 1/2Ē past the wood. That will give me an area to add a fillet for a smooth transition from the rear skin onto the front skin. Also a nice lip for edge trim to attach to.

Pepperson4
02-03-2021, 05:15 PM
Front skin made. 3 layers of 1708. CSM first, 1708, csm, 1708, and then two final layers of 1708 to top it off for the desired thickness. Fillet created in back for skin to transition to hull. Will be two layers of 1708 on back skin. Obviously will be trimmed off flush on bottom, itís overhanging by about an inch currently.

Pepperson4
02-24-2021, 04:31 PM
Well finally got the rear skin on, 2 layers of 1708 after I faired in the core. Will get a white coating of macropoxy same as floor. Got the front mudded also. Still need to do final trim on bottom, about 1.5Ē will be coming off . Using total fair epoxy fairing compound. Works amazing. Very thick tho so takes some effort to spread compared to bondo. But we all know bondo doesnít belong on boats! The whole dash will be painted black

tnelsmn
02-24-2021, 11:14 PM
That will be a nice blank canvas to start with for the dash.

Pepperson4
02-27-2021, 03:08 PM
Got the bottom trimmed off today. Was happy with the overall thickness of about 1/4Ē on the bottom lip. Worked out good for a surface to attach a trim piece too. Got the first layer of filler blocked down and did a skim coat before I left. Will likely need another skim coat once I use a guide coat to really get it flat. Helps to have a nice set of blocks as well.

Pepperson4
03-04-2021, 10:38 PM
All done. Just kidding got the guide coat on and sanded off. Got it pretty damn straight. Did a final skim coat on a couple low spots I missed. Hopefully get primer on Tomorow. Then will do a sealer most likely

Haha yea I had that happen when I was wetting it out to put the core on. Learned my lesson and got a full tyvek suit on and glasses. Also I prewet out all the laminate in the ground first, made it way easier. Helps a lot with epoxy since itís tougher to get it to wet out than vinylester or poly

23 pounds I believe. So still quite a bit lighter than a skater style high back seat. The previous fiberglass racing seats I had were about 19 pounds. Those had steel brackets though.

They seem comfy, lot of padding on the front where your legs sit. On the butt area not so much. But at the end of the day they are a racing seat for cars really. Iím not offshore racing or anything but Lake Michigan does get pretty rough. Iíve always wanted to try out some of the suspension seats they make from x craft. X craft competition seats. Iím sure they are cheap! 😂

The 5/8Ē ply bottom of bench still had too much flex between the stringers. So I opted for 1/2Ē sandwiches between 1708. Couple vent holes. Left a 2Ē strip glass free on perimeter for staples. Found a ton of pinholes I missed so I did a final glaze on the dash, and blocked one last time and then sprayed primer. Got it pretty

Some wet sanding and wax and grease remover and off to the races. Base laid down with some issues from dust nibs. Anyone thatís painted in a barn knows that frustration. After fixing that I was able to get 3 coats of clear on as I plan on wet sanding and buffing it.

Wiring turned out much nicer this time around. 90 percent of the boat is rigged now. Still waiting on upholstery and powder coat on the cleats and windshield bracket. Also waiting on second paddle switch for jackplate to come in. Sheís almost ready to fire up just need to do fuel fill and vent

Cleats are mounted and ready. Went with a 6Ē accon pop up. So this is the 3rd cleat Iíve had in this boat. As you can see Iím very indecisive 🤡😅. Also having a full cover made. Hopefully get the floor done soon and fire it up after I bleed the steering.

Bench is done. Sanded floor back down to primer and reprimed and spray a single reduced layer of raptor liner. I like the durability of it over Gelcoat. I only sprayed 4mils worth of coating roughly. Figured it would be even easier to sand off than a thick layer of gel if a repair was ever needed. I only prayed around where seadek willl be going, rest of floor and bulkheads and bilge remain white.

How far of a reach is that paddle switch attached to the helm with your set up? I ran into that myself using a seastar helm. You need to take your hand off the wheel to reach it, Those are made for their own Uflex helm where they mount up closer to wheel. I am making a spacer to move it out.

I just added a strip of rubber between it and the helm so I could move it closer a bit and it would still tighten down.
