Hi Guys,
So I'm looking for a serial on my Mercury outboard and cant seem to find it. What brings me to wanting to know is temp rise at WOT real quick. I already replaced the water pump and its still doing it so... I'm moving on to poppet valve and t-stats. Once I removed the t-stat housing I found NO t-stat, is this normal for this engine? If I hade model number or model it'll be easier to find parts. not even sure HP (possibly 200 or 225??) I think it might be a 2.4L but not s
ure any help is greatly appreciated.

2.4 200. Probably 87-90. There should be a date code stamped into the block behind the timing arm up high by the trigger. Common to not have tstats, but if not it should have small restrictor washers in their place. Need to know what your water pressure is doing when the temps starts to rise.

Thanks, Mach351. 11387 is there. I took apart the poppet and the rubber valve was stuck shut. But there are so many diagrams so that show poppet and tsats and some that have washer and no poppet. and for me to have one and not the other was odd.

can't tell for sure but looks like you may have a "one piece" adapter plate?.. if so, a poppet and stats won't work...

Can you please exspand on this? Poppet and tstats won't work fixing my overheat issue? The poppet I took out was stuck in the close position from corrosion. And there was no tsats in the heads. I realize tsats won't help the over heating but I was thinking the poppet might? whats attached is what I pulled out.

You have a frankin merc , nothin wrong with that. The hipo motors came with 1 piece adapter plate under powerhead, they dnt use stats and poppet , more flow at high rpms , u have a fishing motor with race adapter, it can b done successfully, but u will have to play with washers and such , the cooling system on the 2 diffrent motors r diffrent , they will b able to explain more, and yes it sure looks like a 1 piece adapter

item 30 in this drawing is half of 2 piece... production motor parts

item 27 in this drawing is second piece of adapter.. when combined referred to as a 2 piece adapter plate.

if its a two piece it needs poppet and t-stats.. at least 3/8" hole (no larger) washers in stats place.. water discjarge needs ta be slowed down to do its job of removing heat... "no stats" can cause an over heat problem...
picture of plater under bottom cowl pan??

Oh great! Frankin Merc + my lack of outboard knowledge = a scream and fly mechanic. Thanks for all the help. All of this has been helpful.

looks like it started life as a factory "hot rod".. popped tha original power head and replaced with production 2.4.. won't need stats or poppet.. would add restrictor washers with 1/8" hole.. blank cover over poppet hole.. replace complete water pump (cle gear case)..
is there another number ona a tag on tha clamp saddle?

Ok guys parts are in and we will see what happens on Sunday. But my next question is what octane fuel should I use 91? ( this is what I been running) Or is it ok to run 87? Since its a franken-merc not sure if it NEEDS higher octane. Thoughts??????

Hi Guys, last time i was on everyone was real helpful and I'm back with another question about my Franking merc. It has a Holley electric fuel pump and regulator, my question is what should my fuel pressure be? Thanks in advance!
I have a Holley Red fuel pump and it puts out 5-7psi.
