Here is my Summer time tow rig when we are doing our local lake. For longer trips, the old military truck is no good.

But...it is awesome being able to get in and out of it soaking wet and id doesn't matter.

I've since replaced the tires on the truck with some Super Swampers and upgraded to LED headlights that are freaking awesome.

I would LOVE to do that - just can't justify the cost and time. It requires a lot of mods - 2" body lift...wiring/computer - cooling systems...linkage...and tuning. Oil pan mods (for front shaft) - blah blah blah…

At a minimum it needs a 4L80E or 700R4 swap. The lack of an overdrive just makes it so hard to keep at highway speed.

So, we run back roads at max 55 mph speeds.

nope - it is the first gen 6.2 It was fully rebuilt in 2004 by the Army in Kentucky. Had 27,000 miles on the rig when I bought it. Runs well for what it is - but just NO speed. Plenty of low speed low range pull torque.

Those engines are good if you start em and leave em running they will run on and on. Start stop can be a pita. Eons ago I remember speaking with a couple officers about the Humvee engine selection being the 6.2 because it wasn't powerful enough to go fast, damage drivetrain, or get it super stuck but enough torque to still be capable. There are some factory built hi-perf Humvees out there too, cant recall the powertrain. Special forces type thing.

Yep - They have the 6.5 TURBO models - they still don't make a ton of power - but night and day from my machine. My truck runs out about 5,100 lbs. The up armor models can hit 14,000 lbs and have the 4L80 and turbo.

Banks has a sidewinder kit - but honestly by the time I did that I could drop a 6.0 gasoline LQ/LS truck engine and just make it haul butt - but, that would ruin the mystique of the truck. I've seen it done.

5100 aint that bad really, not nearly as high as I thought it would be. An LS swap would move that along well and be cheap to do as well as reliable. I've had great success with LS trucks towing
