Hey everyone,
I must be using the wrong search words or something...
I have an Allison Grandsport I'm restoring and the idea of a cut down etec on the back is in my head. Although I cannot find a write up on exactly what I need to do (the right way) to cut the mid down. Anyone can fill me in or send me to a post that can?

Contact Mike Chapman or Chaz on here
Thank you 2.5
But OMC stuff should go to either Monty Racing Engines or Kevin (baja200merc) :)

And if looking Kevin up it's baja200merk

That would be "Lake Tarpon OMC Test Center" :)
Before he got .. old, married and a homeowner ..
Their slogan was ... We test at midnight ! ;)
( Ohh how I wish I was young again ) :o :D :D :D

I'm located in Bermuda, so if it's a process I can get done here it would likely save me alot of money on shipping!
Unless someone state side is willing to assist in me purchasing an engine in the states, cutting it down, and shipping to Jersey or Florida if they arent already there.

Others will b along to help shortly , cutting the mid down and welding everything back together and keep it perfectly straight. Can b a job but if not done correctly u will loose it lower unit ,prop , and possibly ur boat if ur goin fast enuff if it breaks a weld or sumthin. Baja200merc shoot him a PM, pretty sure he in Florida to

Thanks guys! Also thought through the fact that any motor I buy here will have been salt water use, probably not a good idea if i need to have it cut and welded.
Will PM Baja and hopefully he can help me out.

Getting an aftermarket 16" mid from Sam Jenkins would be a far better option as its stronger than a factory mid, especially a cut one. With that being said, there is a lot to it. The shortening of the clamp assembly and tiller then re welding is required. Jenkins mid uses a lower mount that is a far cleaner setup than modifying the factory knuckle also. There really isn't an instruction manual for it. 456844

How much do those sell for?

I think around 1300 or so for the housing. All you need to do is modify the clamp assembly for it. 456883456884456885
Love the look L.G. ...
Just curious, is that a 15" or 16" can ?
Looks to be about 2*- 3* tucked under. Does the front of the can hit the lower cylinder boss / pin area if you go under any farther ?
Is there any type of lower guide's put back anywhere ?
I'm finishing up a single ram / 15" V-8 for one of G's guys. I'll try to remember to snap some pics tomorrow. 10 lbs of **** in a five lb bag aint it ... LOL

16" can. It can tuck under much further than that pic. Here's a more recent setup of mine, not an etec but still same mid setup. This has the integrated clamp with Jenkins 16" mid. 456935

The taylors are sweet and stronger but there’s more to it than just cutting the clamp. Especially if it’s a 3.4 the adapter needs to be cut machined and re welded. To do it right the clamp brackets should be machined to add new clamp saddles as the factory ones must be cut off. We Make brass or Deleon bushings for tilt pin and tiller arm. It’s almost easier/stronger to use a merc clamp and u get a real trim pump out of the deal. We have done a bunch with merc clamp there’s a few benefits over omc.
Jenkins also has nice solid upper and lower mounts.
Lower yoke, Merc to OMC V-8 with Billet lower mount. Single .500 bolt each side ..

The reason I asked about the "tuck-under" was i remembered ( barely ) :o that to even do a 20" they need a shortened cylinder to clear ... :)

Thanks that's definitely good info to know for when I'm ready.
I was thinking of a 2.6L to keep the weight down on the back, should I still explore the merc clamp/trim idea for that motor?

Depends on what you want to use it for but if I was spending the $$$ the merc clamp is more bang for your buck. Much stronger, easily adjusted trim speed, great factory saddles either way you will want good bushings.

boat will be a pleasure weekender. We do offshore racing here but I'm not trying to put a grandsport though that. May catch some chip on the off day, but will try to keep it limited. I'm not trying to hit 3 digit speeds or anything, just want the boat to be a good overall craft for weekend runs. I'm spending the time and money to glass and paint the hull, no sense getting cheap on setup and rigging... (within reason of course)

With the pressure bypass valves in the pump.
Extreme case's .. voltage.

Strait from the mad scientist. This ^^^^^
slow trim hurts here is a perfect example. Well 200+lbs of fuel on the transom doesn’t help either.

Extreme case's .. voltage. Chaz you got a merc part # for the fast valve ? I got two offshore single ram mids both have the round canister style trim pumps one is fast as hell and the other is slow as hell.:D
