View Full Version : How big Setback
Hi guys
im running a Fletcher 199 with a 225 optimax with a hydraulic jackplate.
I’m about 80mph top speed with a 27p Tempest plus (blueprinted/labbed), but I’m running to flat and can’t seem to get it up flying on the back pad.
any suggestions to ad a bigger setback or what to do?

Put your motor down and measure where your propshaft is in relation the pad
The distance from transom to prop shaft or horizontal from prop shaft to buttom?

Boat level... propshaft level... distance apart?
Sorry but I’m just a stupid demarkian (Denmark) haha
Distance from red or blue?

Red
I just confused cause I’ve got a jackplate and therefore the level from shaft to bottom boat varies
When I’m going top speed the shaft is about 2 inches under the pad

how sound is the hull? Speed hook? 80 is good....... time to get a better hull......

The correct setback and height is the secret to a good life.

What do you mean by “how sound is the hull - speed hook”??

Tape a level to the bottom of the pad. Raise or lower the boat on the trailer till it is level. Now, lower the outboard till it is level. Tape a small level to the captivating plate. The one above the propeller where the zink is. Once that's level use a long enough stick to tape to the boats pad and reaches out to the nose of the lower unit. Measure the distance up or down from center of lower unit to bottom of pad. That's how to know where you are with setup

if you setback the motor. the motor needs to be raise up. the water leaving the end of the boat raises up in relation to the pad.

There’s no significant pad on that boat. Most of your lift is coming from the lifting strakes. You will never get the boat to only run on the keel/pad, it’s too narrow. I don’t think you are going to find much more speed. You might try a prop with more bow lift. As for setback, you could probably move the motor back a bit, I’d try a 4” extension between the boat and current plate, it’s cheap. The only problem I see is the motor is already mounted quite high on the existing plate, it’s putting a lot of torque on the transom. It’s also going the make the transom sit lower in the water and on the first shot it’s already precariously low.
Whaaaaat

How much more speed is the stock lower gonna handle? I'd say without a cone or a sportmaster, your pissing in the wind.

I’m currently working on mounting a cone with lwp and skeg is now with a torque tab.

im aware that the pad Is narrow but I know that the boat is capable of gaining more lift.
i have bought a 28P promax and hopefully it can do the trick when i get the lwp and nose cone mounted so I can raise the engine further up.

That Mercury chopper prop is probably why you arent lifting the bow,I ran one on my 21 Daytona with 300x,it was 28p,switched to a 29pMazco RE3 and gained 15 mph no bull****.Mazco and Hydromotive props have more bowlift that any props I ever ran

well i haven’t tried the promax yet.
