Hey all

i picked up a blown 1990 2.4 racing merc it’s missing most electronics flywheel wiring carbs, reeds and heads. So it’s basically just a rotating assembly.
was wondering if any of my 89 2.4 liter parts are interchangeable. I have mid section and lower unit for the 1990 2.4 so if some of my other parts will work on this engine I may put the money in to finish it off otherwise I am going to rebuild the rotating assembly and sell it

I ultimately want to put the racing one back together if some of the other parts will swap
The other 2.4 was complete engine with a scored cylinder
i also have a complete 1990 2.5 with blown cylinder
FYI I bought them blown up

R u talking bout lectrics, carbs and such? Carbs wont b no gud for racin mota, if the xr4 has the water cooled 40 amp ,I wouldnt bother using that system.
If has 16 amp system that will swap

I do have a 16 amp charging system
what are your with using the steel flywheel?

MercRoy

Will the heads fit? Or will that drop compression too much

Merc 2.5

Heads will fit but not sure of the cc of ea motor , would need to cc them or bolt on and do comp test ,,
Any 9 or 16 flywheel will work , red or green I believe , they made a red 40 amp wheel to but they r alot bigger

If I bolt them on what compression should I shoot for pump gas or high octagon?

thanks for the help

Added compression =more fuel/rejet also , 93 pump gas 140 145 , I shot for 145 and got got 145-150 been fine on 93

1990 racing 2.4? Bridgeport?

MercRoy
09-10-2019, 08:24 AM
Yes 1990 2.4 Bridgeport
also looks like intake and reed setup will bolt on from the stock engine is that advisable or should I look for the a racing setup somewhere?

What kind of damage to the block? Is the bridge broken?

MercRoy
09-10-2019, 08:43 AM
Bridge is not broken but cylinder is scored pretty deep rod and piston are gone For That cylinder but sure looks like it may have broken a ring

do you know if its was carb or horn? horn was a 7 petal reed mota i never had a carb bridgeport but lots of horn stuff all were 16 amp alum flywheel stuff

James Perry can put a steel sleeve in it, dont go for the fanged sleeve it junks the block because you have to cut the sleeve holder short to accommodate the flange and its not required for the right machine shop like perry

MercRoy

I believe the engine was original carburetor unit but cannot say for sure as I didn’t purchase engine complete. Is the James Perry you reference from J &S marching out of Clovis NM?
as always to all thanks for the help!

James Perry is in TN. Do you have 7 petal or 5 petal front?

MercRoy
09-11-2019, 01:03 PM
The front is missing at this point.

Bridgeport horn = 245 hp
Bridgeport carb = 225 hp

Im no expert on those old 2.4's, but i dont know if front half from fishing 2.4 will match bridgeport block. Have you checked that?

MercRoy
09-11-2019, 01:55 PM
The bolts line up with cages on and it slides all the way together probably best to look for a horn because I would need the correct carbs as well

Hopefully an expert will chime in. I was just thinking that used a different crank in bridgeports. As far as carbs, you could run wh22's or 46's a jet accordingly. I would use 4 petal cages with carson reeds

MercRoy

Ok
ill check the carbs I have and see which ones they are
thanks is for all the input

What year is your 2.5?

MercRoy
09-11-2019, 02:08 PM
That one is a 90 I believe

bullet123
09-11-2019, 02:28 PM
That would have 5 petal cages also

My last Bridgeport was a 7 petal carb with wh15s. If you want a horn let me know as I have a couple (cheap).

Some pics would help alot. As rock said Bridgeport is a 7/14 pedal reed set up , as for horn and carbs , gonna b lot more $ to set it up for horn as carbs would b very simple. Can u post pics of the 2 motors that ur wanting to use?

Intake or front half missin?

Will horn work on 5 petal front?

Mighty good question there. I'm not sure if it will fit a 5 or not .... since all were 7s idk

The horn motors have the injectior bosses in the front 1/2. All horn motors were 7 petal. No 5 petal front 1/2's have injector bosses. The horn should physically bolt on but there wil be nowhere to put the injectors...

There was an injected front 1/2 in the classifieds recently.

That's a 5 pedal on "racing " engine. Hard to belive that's a racing 2.4. What's the serial#

MercRoy
09-11-2019, 03:55 PM
The five pedal was from a diff engine and I was wondering if I could/should run this on the race 2.4

Number stamped on block is 91c854

Merc 2.5
09-11-2019, 03:57 PM
That's not serial, should b welch plug in top block in between heads or where to block halves meet where throttle timin arm goes
And yes that was a carb front half

MercRoy
09-11-2019, 04:12 PM
Those are the only numbers I can find on block except for what looks to be a date stamp of 03 12 91
the mid section that came with it has Oc276549 as a serial number but I cannot confirm 100 percent that is the original mid

Merc 2.5

With yr being 91. Is there not a plug that looks like freeze out plug on top of block? Usually letter comes 1st in serial

09-11-2019, 04:44 PM
Well for ****s and giggles. What's the tag on mid

Comes as 90 2.4 carb is block black or "natural color "
Are the heads bolted on it?
03/12/91 is. Consider 90 model

MercRoy

Block is bare and heads are missing

a load of changing for a not so experienced motor contestant:iagree: and i mean that in a nice way as you will be a contestant trying to win a up hill battle !!!! horn equals different front, injectors, reed plates hold downs, harness , ecu external tpi unless you go with a digital ecu , different fuel system which is several different items you would need so much stuff to turn it to efi youve never seen and with no experience its not a so easy project. i gave big big bunch of bridge port parts to Chris Carson a few years ago several horns fronts all kinds of stuff off of bridge ports think i found a external tpi while looking for my DDT chips the other day if it was me id build a 200 efi and leave the 2.4 stuff behind at this point some parts are disappearing from the market and NLA or a carb 200 which is a lot cheaper

Thanks for the input all and certainly impressed by the wealth of knowledge on this site. I leaning more to agree with Texas here.
Anyone need a 2.4 BP block and mid section?

bullet123
09-12-2019, 04:24 AM
post pics of mid. If its one piece plate and single ram trim, worth more than the rest of your Bridgeport stuff.
