You had me do a search and there are threads on speed coat , - rex marine possibly the thread read but they also talk about a 320 to 400 wet sand scratch is a better release or a non waxed finish provides an increase is laminar flow vs polished smooth . I thought I had people in the past you also try and sand with flow direction - not sure if that' correct but ??? So they just stated yes a coating can be used but primer was also considered excellent but sanded . I dont know why a gelcoat can' be used but sanded but possibly very thin coats of gel either don' adhere or kick over properly due to lack of mil thickness . Not sure -bodyman - not as affuent in gels as the southerners - or boat builders and riggers where this is basic knowledge .hope that helps and maybe you will get a better undersyanding with the search
