A customer from our music store says he has a Johnson 70, I'm guessing it's probably late 70's or early 80's by his description. He says it's got a cooked piston. How much is a blown up complete 3-banger worth for repair or parts?

Should be able to get that for the lower alone and the rest will be all cake.

I told him that the lower unit's worth at least $200 alone, I'm just curious what he might expect to get for the whole thing...

Id tell him $300 for the hole thing, but its not worth crap if it needs a sleeve or 2,depending how long he ran it with the cooked piston.

I agree with y'all on the value, but what in the hell do you do with an engine with a blown powerhead if you're gonna sell the gearcase??????

If you could rebore the cylinders it would be a good buy for $300 but to get it runin again it would take $300 for pistons, rings, gaskets, the bore job if thats all thats wrong with it.Is it short shaft? What year?

I'd bet there is a buyer for every part of that engine. To buy the whole thing to fix up, I dont know if I'd buy it at all. But to part it out, Id bet it would bring in a G-note or better. Could probably get $200 for the carbs, 100 for the mid and so on. The trim and tilt system would pull in some cash too if its equipped with it. I wouldnt buy it to fix up as you can get late 70's motors on ebay and elsewhere for like $500 in that hp range.

Fluidgrooves....Are you farmilaiar with these engines?Because if you think someone could get $200 for the carbs alone than you arent. If the engine does happen to be in the 70's i wouldnt go anywhere near it.Seeing how it is hard to find pistons for OMC's in the 75hp and less range in the 70's.And if the mid is a 20" you might be able to scrape up $50 for it.If you totally rebuild the engine was in the mid 80's you could probably resale for about $1800-$2000 if it was rebuilt proberly and had a decent paint job done to it.Just my 2 cents....

Thanks for your help, guys. Maybe I'll buy iy and part it out myself. Who knows, could be a fun fix-up project...

Meant to say $100 for the carbs. Maybe these motors are more valuable in your neck of the woods, but a late 70's early 80's 3 banger wouldnt get you $1200 up this way (even with a fresh powerhead). Used mid 80's Merc 200's are bringing in all of about $1500 in good shape up here.

Maybe this will give you a vague Idea when the auction is finished. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2415573064&category=26454

Fluidgrooves.....When i said it could bring in $1800 i meant if it was a totally rebuilt powerhead, and mildly modified,no stock johnson would bring that, and i only said it would bring that much if it was in the 80's!!!!NOT the 70's!!!!I just sold a totally rebuilt 44.9ci 50 engine for $1650,but it was painted and was modified.Stock gearcase, since the guy didt want one.So thats a little comparson for you, just add another cylinder.:D

damn guys.. this is a blown up motor. its got a cooked piston and odds are the crank is messed up also (assume the worst). the block may need a re-boring also. i wouldnt give him from then $100 for the whole thing.

Not to sound argumentative, but they just dont bring in that kind of money up here. Maybe its because our summer is so short compared to yours. I can buy 50 hp's in good shape for less than
$800, and the last one I sold (with a fresh powerhead (50 hp)), only scored me $900. Anyways, Just my two cents. Pyro, I'm sure when you posted this you didnt expect a debate, lol. Hope everyone has a good holiday weekend. Take care

Pyro,
Im with gottagofast, give em $100 bucks for the thing if he"ll take it.Because theres not really a way to make sure its savigable without taking it apart.

Fluidgrooves....Im not doubting you can get engines for $800 up there,i live around alot of country folk, that dosent know anything about motors,so i pick them up left and right for $400-$100 all the time, some times i get lucky and get powerheads for $50.
