View Full Version : Best rpm for breaking in steel bore 260 f f blocks vertex pistons
Was out today for a bit ran motors under 3000 rpm for about 45 minutes, Enough of that , took it home .should I run higher rpm say 4 to 5000 ? Least it won’t be as boring

I'm pretty sure u need couple hrs 3500 and lower , Carson has a good break in procedure on his web site , check it out
Yes this part SUCKS
You've had bad luck with the chrome etc, then with the rings etc , why rush it now?
3rd year in a row breaking in motors people around here are going to think I am a chicken **** driving around the lake at 35 mph 3 years in a row

Yeah I know....had to break in my Promax last year, seemed like it took an eternity. I basically did the same thing you are doing but gave it a blast every now and then, just don't hold it there for a long time.... think that helps seat the rings. I also think you are looking for a decent number of heat cycles to get the pistons stabilized. You are running standard Merc oil, correct? Let me know how that motor runs after she is broke in. My 260 is getting close for another freshening up, and have been thinking about going steel sleeve
Standard merc oil 32 to 1 idle at home for 1/2 hr each then I idled in water for while till I saw temp move then 1500 rpm for 20 minutes ,then plain off under 3000 for 45 minutes varring to 2500 then back to 1500 for a bit ,then throttle to 3500 and back down but don’t plain off ,idle to the trailer go home do leak down ,evens are good odds 2 to 4 % so we’ll see next time out

Next time out keep it under 5K for an hour, then under 6k for an hour and so on. Once you have 5hrs you should be good in short bursts.
Dave
It takes all day to break one in, early morning till sunset, then the next day by noon you're wide open, heat cycles included.

Dave personally i never baby it, just dont hold it at any set rpm, switch it up, short wot ok, 10 seconds, then 5000, 4000. 5 hrs. your done.

It's a days work on the water, what more can you want!
More to it than that, reading plugs, maybe jetting and ign, settings idle just right when finished.
forgot to say water temp 55 ish temp gage was tad over 100 degrees more water out of poppet side no poppet , than out of top of heads small hole washer , plate plugged and drilled 19/64 holes ,blocks have mod done from john miffco so no water come in from drain holes , 5 psi at 35 mph . which is about what I had before with the nic blocks its over 10 psi haulin azz before so we will see soon .
spark plugs are black and wet ngk b9hs i had them in last motors for breakin and it sounded like missfiring so back in with buhs for now have drilled .072 jets plenty fat ,stock should be .068 idle is .070 and off idle is 50
Cold water, longer more gentle break in! LOL
84 today 70 tomorrow mid 70 next week water will warm some,up to a week ago it was still fall or winter ,I don’t know :eek:
Lots of water around, takes longer to warm up. Our open water mid lake surface temperature is 37.4° - 38° F , one hour ago.

http://www.coastwatch.msu.edu/michigan/m21.html Northern lake Michigan.. about a month behind norm.
Yes and no. In decades past, 70s 80s and earlier when we had good and full levels we had cooler years with that, cooler slower springs. Been here before, decent ice cover for the last few years with finally decent amount of precip. We like it here!
I use those links, good info. Lake levels long term, only about 100 years, the late 1800s had some real full years.

Back on the subject. You be running straight mineral oil during break in with steel bore?. I would hope.
In this day and age , the majority of "break-in" is done in the honing tank. Or more correctly said: "should be done in the honing process" .
Then taking a motor out and running it overly rich, only wash's the oil from the RVK ( valleys ) causing heat from friction no matter what kind of oil you use or the temp of the water your in.
A little common sense goes a long way … a little extra oil. A little smaller prop than normal. Don't spin it to the moon the first few times out and after that , if it comes apart .. it was gonna do it then or a year from then .. ;)

a few heat cycles and it "oughtta" be ready.... if not like tha man says, it won't ever be READY... jmo
If hone finished correctly. Still a day on the water is always better than a....

You an hone and finish all you want, if you don't get the bores perfectly clean the issues arise.

FuMP .. told me he uses Borax, Royal Purple, Lava soap and Maple suurup as a cleaner/assembly lube .. :p
While we're at it .. :D
Is it OK to leave a few of those pesky needle bearings or a few circlips out ...

I have a bit of Procter and Gamble in the portfolio that my dad left me .. err .. my son .. ;)
I was happy to write them a short E-mail to tell them :
As a stockholder it's nice to see we make a product that makes the kids of today want to wash their own mouth's out with soap !

climate change is real folks
Of course it is ... Take today in Florida for instance. The sun came up, it got hot.. like 95 in the shade hot. Then the climate began to change , the wind blew, it rained real hard for about an hour, temp dropped 20* then the clouds broke up, the sun came out, hot again, now it's beginning to settle in the west and cool off ... I bet when it comes up again in the morning , it will be hot again ... constantly changin  But you'd have to be a dumb **** to go to Paris and give them $ 40,000,000,000.00 to think your gonna change mother nature !

Damn we swimming in lakes already. Bout 80ish surface temp
Three or four years ago, first week of June had thick lake ice still hanging around on the SE shore of L Superior northern Michigan. It's been gone for weeks this year. It's going to warm up now, nice and fresh and comfortable!
But first, some Lake effect snow flurries tonight.

That's climate change. Towards the end of the week it will be 80 which is above average temperature, so that is global warming. I think I am getting this.
