Alright, let's see how many of you can find what is wrong with this page from the 1980 Johnson outboards catalog. The images in on the page were not modified in any way, and are exactly as they were in the catalog. Finding the anomoly here is not easy, and you'll have to know what you're looking for to see it right away. :)
Let's see who is the first to get it. The winner gets a S&F Racing decal!

The OMC 2hp had no lower cowl for most of its production run. :)

It's not flipped, but I see you're both looking closely at details, which is what you'll need to do to find the issue on the page. :)

In the first picture, that guys hat is a crime against god and nature.
The clamp height of the 2 hp on the whaler looks wrong.

Is the pic with the pike? The decal on the outboard? Can't. Make out if it says Johnson or not. Looks off to me.

I'm going with Rick here too. It don't look right. I just sold a Evinrude 2 HP Mate, same as the Johnny 2 here. They weigh 31 pounds too, not 24 mine anyway.

It's the number of people not wearing their PFD's ,,,,,, in the Lund boat the two adults are not wearing them,,, the two people in the Boston Whaler no PFD's ,,, the two fellows setting out top go fishing are wearing fishing vests not PFD's ,,,the two guys already fishing with a Pikemuskie on the line PFD's are optional.
Ok I didn't see that especially the OMC people,,,,

picture #2 looks like it has a fake cowl sitting on another...........maybe the older round style? It looks like a round lower edge that's barely visible. That cowl is a fake!!
Johnson?

Too obvious, thought maybe it said fisherman, for marketing purposes.
Plenty of lifejackets for 78/79 when these pics were likely taken for the 80 models.

Lastly, where are the hp numbers? Arent they supposed to have hp numbers on the sides? That Johnson 2 that was posted later has a hp decal on the side. I cant see one on any of those others.

Built in fuel tank on the one engine (not the 2hp). Don't recall them having it.

Dave is the winner! That’s exactly what’s happening there. It appears as if a 1980 model 6hp was not available at the time of shooting and they just placed the newer cowling on an older 6. Very good eye on that call!

Cowling decals two dif years.
Thats also a great point. In looking closely, the engine itself appears to be a 1980 model. On the cowl, it looks like somewhat messy paint touch up that gave the cowl a look similar to the 1979 model. In areas of images that were dark or difficult to see, it was very common for the images to be touched up with paint when gong to print to make details more visible. That’s what looks like is happening here. Over the years in OMC catalogs there are many examples of very obvious touch up work that was less than ideal, but would not usually be noticed with the lower resolution print process. Very good eye on that Randy, I actually didn’t notice it!

As a kid with a john boat and no motor I poured over the engine catalogs (all makes) until I got a brand new 6hp Evinrude for Christmas in 1967. I have a collection of many of the old catalogs and seeing these reprints brings back good memories.
Evinrude catalogs were great in that every model had a page dedicated to it and there was a full table of specifications at the end.

What you just described is the very same way it was for me. I was glued to the catalogs. They came with me all through elementary school right into college. I still love em. All I would do I’m elementary school was draw the Johnson V4 on my dad’s boat. I absolutely love small outboards.
Still not faster than the 8 looper CHRYSLER, same years.

Interesting note about your 7.5 - the 7.5 never really went out of production when the 8 came along. When OMC began prop-rating outboards at that time (I think in 1984 as the first year) the 7.5 became the new prop-rated 6.
When I was 13 my dad got me a 1986 Evinrude 4DLX. I kind of wished it was a 6 but that’s alright. :DI used that engine almost every day in the summers and could never get enough of it. I just loved it. I sold it before I moved here in 2003 and regret that decision immensely. It had a lot of sentimental value.

I’ve actually heard this from other people. I also heard the Chrysler 9.9s were pretty good too.

I got an Evinrude 6hp the summer of 1969 when I was 12, and it was legal for me to run. When I was a kid, I knew every boat, and what motor it had, on the river our cabin was on.

Heck yeah! And if you were sleeping in the morning you could tell every motor by sound of it taking off or going by as you woke up. Good stuff!

I know ya would! I hate to sell it! But..I had a 10 foot Olympic Dinghy, stable Tri-Hull similar a Whaler that a friend GAVE me, as needed bottom work from dragging it up the rock beaches. I had done all needed but inside paint.
Well, as I been 19 since born 1950, was still 19 until 2018 and got old age fast. Been a real chit year and a 1/2. But been to easy life anyway. Got a Stent in my leg, almost lost it, but kept it. June 13th be 69, NOT 19 again..( and I got to much good STUFF!! Only keeping 2 my HD's, and my crank up re-build motor, 15 foot Flatty. Merc 150 IL6.
Getting old but I damn sure did NOT do it gracefully. And I AINT planning hitting 70 for a LONG TIME!
