View Full Version : Boat molds...

Just curious if anyone has any boat molds to build with. Something fitting for this site. I'm actually considering making a mold with the new project I got. It needs a lot of cosmetic work, but a hull mold wouldn't be too hard. It's a hydrostream vector copy. I know they've been splashed plenty. But I'd love to have a new one I built from a mold. Plus I know a certain person that's redoing a 13 bullet and had mentioned a mold maybe. Just thinking..... There has to be a small market for really well built boats that won't kill the bank.
.
Please do it
You will get a good response I think
Just don't sell them as Hydrostreams, might wake up the Hydrostream brand owner
I think that if we collectively built molds of Hydrostreams, we will keep these awesome boats around forever

Be great to be able to buy a new Viking in bruiser colors identical to the late 70’s model - such a classic.

There was a guy down in South Louisiana that had a mold he splashed of a vector. It looked great and ran straight and true. Not sure where the molds went.

Gorilla,
Do you have a hull now to work as a plug?
Lots of "project" level hulls in Craigslist that can be purchased for only hundreds of dollars to act as a plug
If you don't have one, lemme know which model you want and I will find one for you.

I would love to Pull a mold off My bullet, but prefer a cheap project to prep for a mold them build it and pop a few boats. Not many small performance minis around anymore, a Voodoo or similar mold would be awesome too. Just alot of time and work.

Yes I have a 400$ vector copy. Pics in build up and fiberglass discussion. Lots of blisters on bottom, but heavy build so it should hold its shape. Never been rigged, just rotten and soggy.

Very cool looking boat. Nice job, what was the process? did you build a reversed boat to pull a mold off ?
Started with my 1985 Sleekcraft SST, cut it up raced the plug then splash.

The most satisfying boats you build are the ones that are of your own design. You can use what others have done, "that's easy" but an original "gorilla craft" is really the best way to go. Who knows? You may find that you are an innovator after you get started designing it. Start simple, and then build from there. What do YOU want to have as the result of a crap load of work?
Get some big pcs of paper and tape it to the kitchen table and put your ideas to paper.

I putted past Steve Earwood (owner of Rockingham Dragway) one morning after I noticed they changed their web address. I asked kind of half over my shoulder, How much did Vince McMahon pay you for TheRock.com .. He smiled and said : whatever your thinking .. and boosted his thumb upward about three times ..
You know .. good for him ..

It's 5 am. I'm up, drinking coffee, and going out in a boat that I built, and in fact drew up on my kitchen table. Built in 1990 it is an antique now. But is as good now as it was when new. Great boat! You can build your own boat. It wasn't my 1st and won't be my last I hope. I ironically make my own cookies too. And damn they are good. Better than any dried out elfen stuff. Chocolate, p-nut butter, cocoanut, and walnuts on top. They are the no-bake kind and very easy. This is my world......I'm having it my way....
.
Another vote for

I have been kicking the idea around, yes. The longer they sit, the more sun and weather damage they get.
Getting ready to move them to a new site in about a month so I'll have better pictures then.

Here is a list of what these molds made.
Checkmates from mid to late 1990's:
Persuader 218/219 Hull
Persuader 218 Deck (open bow)
Persuader 219 Deck
Convincor 216 Hull
Convincor 216 Deck
Pulse 185/186 Hull
Pulse 185 Deck (open bow)
Pulse 186 Deck
Pulse 170/171 Hull
Pulse 170 Deck (open bow)
Pulse 171 Deck
Persuader 183 Hull
Persuader 183 Deck
Convincor 242 Hull
Convincor 242 Deck (for standard windshield)
Convincor 242 Deck (with molded in windshield)
Convincor 242 floor mold (mostly just for a pattern)
The hulls have steel reinforced bottoms the rest of the framing is wood.
Checkmate built extremely thick and heavy molds.
All need reworked, some might need to be retooled.
There you go, with a little work enough molds to start a boat company.

I refinished some old molds once for a customer. Toughest job I ever had. What wasn't blistered from standing water, was either cracked from the sun or warped from being stored improperly. Complete re-gell will most likely be required and a lot of release agent used since it's the 1st pull from the new surface.

Well it is "tooling" gel. If you had to repair it (I have done some tooling) you would hate it too. It's great for high production.
So you seem to know so much, why not make a go for it yourself?
