So I’m caught in a pickle right now scratching my head..

i have a 200hp Merc 2.4 which I have issue with starting. Recently, I had got the timing readjusted and it was turning fine but the battery had died out before I could test the spark to each cylinder.

Bought a new battery and even swapped out the old battery cables on the motor, as he connections were coroded and frayed (still was able to kick over w/ old cables).

Randomly when hen I hit the key it now makes this “click” noise which I figured was the solenoid so I replaced it with a new one but to no avail it’s still making that noise. I’m guessing it’s a bad ground connection somewhere because power is constant through all other functions of the boat but if anything else....please HELP LOL.

are you grounded directly from battery to motor block ?

So when u"hit" the key , the starter or starter solenoid just clicks and wont crank? When u push key in that should b choke solenoid clickin

Yes, realized that there is also a fuse in the line I took it apart and found this....

Planning on swapping it out today and hopefully that resolved it. Fingers crossed 435082

So still having an issue...changed solenoid, took off carbs and rebuilt them, even changed the fuel pump to a new one.

However i keep getting the same result, motor wants to fire (even shoots out flame from the exhaust) however it doesn't stay started or idle. At a standstill at this point because i've exhausted my brain and im really trying to avoid paying someone else to do it (especially at peak boat season).

Any other ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

flames and not runnin' usually indicates timin' and/or switch box wiring messed up... double check switch box ta coil colors.. trigger ta switch box colors....

I’d recheck your timing. If it’s shooting fire out of the exhaust the timing could be too far retarded at idle. Check it on all cylinders

agree with eric 'bout it.. tha "other stuff" I mentioned usually produces a back fire along with a flame...

If you had the coils off check that they went back onto the right sides. Definitely timing issue
