Starting these up at the dock is a pretty smokey adventure with the oil initially recommended. Would full synthetic help?

Those are steel bore , full synthetic isn't recommended, Simi synthetic is best, I run it 40-1 in my promax even with double oil in break in virtually no smoke, you might have a a engine problem if its smoking bad, I run penzoil, 17$ gallon at Walmart

What are the actual molecular properties, physical reality which don't favor full syn in "steel" bores?

The x has a different oiling system than the promax.

Ask Jay Smith or do a search on here,

I run the same as Papa (Pennzoil Synthetic blend) Smoke is there but not like some of the old motors. 10 gallons of race fuel in the tanks makes the smell much easier to accept.

You ask the syn manufacturers and it proves it's worth better than than the rest, test and properties don't lie. The builders swear by what they see, some forks have run full syn for years with steel, no problems.

None of us have ever figured the smoke issue out, some even have oil that should be burnt up flowing out the exhaust.

Synth is notorious for not doing proper breakin on iron. It prefers to operate more like a cast iron skillet. Synthetic never seasons the bore and many with detergent will scrub out a seasoned broke in bore. But your experience and life might vary. Definitely don’t swap back and forth.

Just remember a line from Adam ruins everything. The company makes the oil and pays for the study.
