I have an SEI lower unit that is painted black, its brand new, but I want to paint it white.

Now don't laugh, but I want to paint it with a OEM outboard paint rattle cans.

What should I do to the surface to prepare it?

Have any of you guys attempted this?

Some guidance and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm not a professional painter, but I've painted many rooms over the years.

Everything, in my opinion, is dependent on the existing wall colour and the quality of your paint. If you're starting with a dark colour or cheap paint, you'll probably need a primer. Given the colours you've indicated, you probably don't need a primer if you didn't start with cheap paint.

Also, take the time to clean the wall first. Use a large sponge and warm, slightly soapy water. Remove all of the dust, dirt, and grease from it. Wipe it down again to remove any remaining soap and make sure it's dry. Then you can paint. It will be extremely beneficial.
