Timing and throttle arm problem. When I move throttle arm back and forth the timing arm does not move so I think I have something jacked up. Help please. I have a picture but cannot figure out how to put in on here

Looks like the spring is broke inside the arm assembly and not returning upper arm.
I think Bruce is correct. There are 2 stop screws and the only one that should be on a stop when the throttle cable is in that position is the bottom one. Top half of arm should move forward a couple inches. That is where the spring comes in. It may not be broken just not in the correct position.

Ok the spring is not broke but is the part at top where it connects to stator or whatever it is called with the coils look right? How do I figure out the correct way the spring should be in the assembly?

its out of adjustment if spring is in tact, where top portion is located is full advance (arm connected to trigger not stator). remove throttle cable and start backing off bottom and top .some body who knowS something about link and sync needs to be on hand it must be re timed or you can wipe it out by not knowing WhAT TO DO:nonod:

The picture you show is wide open throttle...here's pic of mine with closed throttle or idle.

Ok I may do that but would t let you do it for free. The thing is I didn’t move any of the stops so idk how it would have gotten out of adjustment. I pulled it all off in 1 piece when I pulled powerhead and put it back on in one piece. The throttle assembly did kinda come apart and now the spring pushes it back to the spot it is at in the pic. I can move it to left by hand freely and the spring pushes it back

My guess is spring has come un hooked at top or bottom , gonna have to take arm off and split it and respring it , just did a 150 and it dne it to me twice after I greased everything real gud , if bolt is little to loose that holds arm ,its liable to do that,, the arm is acting as 1 piece without the spring to pull top half back

The arm is not acting like one piece. You can move throttle arm back a forth but timing arm stays right where it is at in the picture. The spring could have come loose though. It seems like the spring is pushing the wrong way but it has not ever been completely removed. The 2 pieces kinda split when I was putting it back on but I never pulled it apart just worked the spring till it went back together.

Yep that's ur prob. Gonna have split it

+1 on the sync out o’ wack. It’s in closed throttle position with idle timing screw and wot timing screws both on stops. If spring had an issue idle timing screw wouldn’t be on stop.

I see what ur talkin bout bit there not enough adjustment on idle screw to get him back to idle, dnt look like neway

Top arm not moving because wot timing screw on stop. The spring allows lower arm to continue moving once timing arm is on wot stop. You should feel spring pressure while moving lower arm once ring arm hits stop, if so spring ok

The spring is holding pressure on timing arm to where it is located now. The stops have not been touched. Should spring be pushing the timing arm toward max timing. That is what it is doing now. I took a video of it but cannot post it

The spring does push timing arm towards wot timing, but idle timing screw prevents it from going that far at closed throttle. Unless adjustments way out...

I adjusted idle timing screw all the way in and it brought idle timing to about 8 max timing is now 21. Seems to idle good on the muffs

I will when I get home. Didn’t take a pic after I set timing and ran it on muffs a little.

Sumthin still ain't rite with the arm imo! U shouldn't have to adjust all way one way. Now u have no adjustment if idle is hi or Visa versa. Sumthin ain't rite

I took arm apart. Either way you put the spring in it does the same thing. I cannot figure it out

After looking for a few. Have u done complete link and sync ?
Calvin1013
01-06-2019, 06:24 PM
I have not done a link and sync. I did read about in in the manual. I did check that pointer was lined up on roller. I didn’t check top dead center either. I may have to let someone else do all that

A full link and sync is a must on any motor!
If your not familiar or have tools ,I would suggest spending $ on tools instead shop to do it. All u need is a tdc guage, jay Smith has a gud one, after u obtain that it's very simple ,but it would cost lots less if u do it. But It needs b dne to c how everything is, if your timing is way way off b only reason for odd adjustment?? Maybe sumone can point sumthin out that I'm missin

its a know how to do it right deal:iagree: first thing i do is the 462 deal so i know where pointer is exactly i set arm about where it should be ( ive set 100s and 100s so it no mystery deal to me then i set low speed timing to around 5/6 then set hi speed timing to 23 or so , fire it up then i wait till motor warms up enough for the ecu to stop choking itself the set the idle with the idle screw i never touch throttle arm adjustments again unless i change trigger offer still stands

I would like to thank Texas20225 for his help. Had some bad switch boxes that is why the arm was adjusted the way it was when I got the boat. He also did a link and sync. He is a great guy and I am proud I got to meet him.
