Never posted this when I got it...And was asked to post
"Do me favor when you have the time, sit down w/a beer (or 5) and make a thread of the history and pixs if your boat.
Id love to see it as would many others.
If you don’t like the lime light, blame me." <<<Insigator blame him
.15/14 years ago picked up my boat will post pics of over the years a handful at a time.
Spent a lot of time looking for this!
After selling my 380 lazer w bridgeport 2.4 that we totally redid(would have posted that but was before SNF) I was w/o a boat for a few years
(should have gotten rid of the reason i sold it first and kept the boat:rolleyes:)But heres pics of the day a got it.

Thanks and yes still havent been able to run it with the new power heads long story but anyway.....an now we just got a ft of snow was hoping to get in a last 1-2 days of just warm enough to get out but we'll see.
Will try a keep it in order with pics and changes upgrades and damage and repairs(mostly from running in 4' swells and hitting a dually rear floating in the river)

I'm not rushing making sure I don't miss anything was alot done to them and was having a problem with temp...not over heating really
gauges are showing higher than my gun by 20- 30* and have been going back and forth checking stuff and to the ramp.
Water on the hose(in the water it's fine) isn't great all new water pumps etc and was fine with the other heads so paronoid..since one of my other motors ate a Reed stop don't have backups:nonod:..and $$$ they would cost

It has to look worse before it looks better.
Have work ahead of you but I've seen that shop!! And winter to work in it..that things going to be solid!
want to make seats at some point but it's been 11 years since I took the others out and have just using the ones I picked up for couple hundred423555
Mine was actually in great shape transom floor etc was either just redone or solid..paint job etc and motors they actually did right mechanically(I modified after I got it but) and paint job.. was all taken apart for paint not half assed

Screws sticking out! Damn don't need to find out the hard way. Hopefully the vinyl is salvagable and you just need to rebuild seats..
The seats that were in the boat were nice just to damn big and weighed a ton about 150 a piece so they had to go..
Wanted to make new ones but don't have a sewing machine anymore and between materials to make the shells then getting a machine was not i the budget..
Have access for molds to these but not sure they'll fit right

Aleast I won't have to spend money to make the mold but

After a quick look over the boat before I took it out looking for the good and the bad.
I bought the boat on eBay with a little faith didn't have to pay until I looked at it and was happy it was as described so..
Was as described and better was willing to do work because it was what I wanted..Not as much as someone is doing but.
Good
- motors start with a tap of the keys
-motors said they were 200s are 225s
-solid mounts
-low water pickups installed right didn't fine Bondo(now I
have to touch up paint)
-motors were Clean
-props were worked by the original spinelli prop shop
-transom floor etc solid, transom was redone
-motors rebuilt wiseco pistons and some other work done
-everything works(so know somethings going to happen when I go out)
-wiring in good shape(bad not real neat and about 12' of extra wire in the harnesses thats annoying)
Bad-interior in cabin is in great shape but the interior is original herculan durable as hell but not comfortable at all.
Has to be changed
-front seats are to big they come out.
-Not bad but..All the cabin is still there(seat backs with shelves etc) means it has to come out just extra unnecessary weight.
So nothing really bad just cosmetic! Was really happy
mrichartz
12-08-2018, 12:19 PM
So first thing was to pull out the extra stuff in the cabin.
All the herculan ripped out Changed to plain white vinyl
Seat backs(plywood backs and shelves Behind bench seats)
Cut out one bulkhead dug out all the foam and added more storage
BUT left the fur ceiling!
Took out the heavy a$$ front seats and replaced with some i picked up new but CHEAP ..was supposed to be temporary that was 11 years ago so still working on that.
Cut the bench to take out all the unneeded ply, mostly so i could take the bench seat in and out easier and put the hatch on.
Replaced the carpet
Installed interior led lights stereo etc..
Of course i cant seem to get the better pics to uploaded for some reason but
425104 425108425103425107425105425106
Next are the new
Powerheads(list of stuff done to them and the machine work/Porting done by James Perry)
Jackplates
Steering
Trim/jackplate paddle switch etc

Oh another reason i like the old Evinrude is the shifter has a screw at the linkage..
So running up and down a 10 mile section of the hudson river making laps all day long in 4' conditions in the middle of the river(its been about 5/6 years ive had the boat so had it running real well nice top speed etc)
PROBLEM was there was a big storm a few days earlier and i didnt see the rear end of a dually bobbing just at the surface of the water...
The reason i like the screw..i just replaced the lower units(even half assed the paint just to get it in the water for the week after it had been raining most of the summer)
I thought i missed it it but about 30 seconds later the boat made a hard turn to the right..
and this happens425109425110425111
so yea would have been a brand new coned lower unit at the bottom of the river..luckily just trimmed it up threw a rope around it and called it a day.
At least there was rubber on the damn thing and it just broke the mid.
But it did trash my prop the other blade had a crack starting to go thru it..and spinelli props were out of business
I will say this even with this happening i had one hell of a great day!! everyone at the dock was more bummed than i was kept telling them at least its the easier/cheaper fix and amount of work..lower units still there and had a spare prop at least

Thanks, cant get the better pics of the cabin and stuff done inside to upload.
The wrong pics are loading, the pic of the heads where supposed to be the bulkhead i cut out/modified and all the foam under the bed i took out and epoxy painted all of it for storage..
Having technical difficulties all the pics are on the computer i havent been using and its not cooperating!
spending time tryng to get all the pics together 15 years think they are on 6 different devices..just uploading them all to cloud storage.
Ok ill upload pics more often keep working!:D
Do you have a plan for your cabin yet or?
Going to change it alot for your setup, camping etc?
Your Gas tank looks great!
Thats one reason i made the hatch all the extra storage(taking out the bench and swapping saves some weigh) and easy as hell for things like the week at the romp/camping to just throw everything in then just unpack. I dont do it much i usually have as little in the boat as possible but nice to be able to do

How much setback have you run and how has the hull reacted?
Have 20" motors as you know and powerheads are close in rough water all the way down but with jackplates it's fine.
But I want as fast as possible (for what it is obviously)
And didn't want extra height..
First was 7 1/2" setback and motors were 1" below trans
Took a little to get on plan but wasn't bad.
It would porpoise(not really bad but enough)from take off till 50 if I didn't use the trim tabs about 10 degrees give or take..and had to be careful when I raised them even after 50 depending on water conditions and people(weight) in the boat..
Would run up to top speed quick and handled really well.
Have 13 1/2" setback now with jackplates and
setup 2 1/2"below to 2 1/2" above trans.(water pressure is still good)
Haven't had much time with it yet..
put the jackplates, new steering and some other stuff on two years ago and the port motor ate a read stop425435425436(that's why Boyesen reeds)425437 after about 3 hours and and had been adjusting everything so only got 3 wot runs like 4-5 miles..
But would JUMP on plane and so far porpoise(if not gone/just small amount) was much better, top speed was noticably faster and quicker to get there(at least it seemed)didn't time it.
Still handled really well..for the limited amount of time I got was really happy..
Then this year built the new powerheads and still in break in (long story short have major nerve damage in three places in lower back and neck so everything takes alot longer and have to be careful or my leg/arm are paralyzed)
So by the time I built them installed etc all it did was rain for a month and a half(at least when I would try and take it out)..so now we sit and wait till warmer weather.
*** Seems to be better balanced with the extra 5 1/2" at 13 1/2 the 5 1/2" did make a big difference
Actually looking for donor stuff to make some motors and keep my mind off the damn winter and waiting..
Typed this on my phone(and can only see one line at a time)so maybe editing after :D
Porpoise..checked the bottom and it's good no dips etc
Oh was going to call the other day but by the time I found your number(phone moved it to wrong name) it was late

12-11-2018, 11:27 AM
Really want to see how yours handles with/if you do the pad
mrichartz
12-11-2018, 12:06 PM
Oh that was with trim tabs before I changed them..
Wondered if longer would help without dragging (slowing it down) as much and coundnt find any that would fit with the brackets etc..
Ended up just taking some aluminum and made bigger tabs and worked really well and the price was right.:D
More surface area but don't need to drop them as much and got better speed at same rpm etc..
I mean it's a 35 year old boat with 88/86/95 motors
It does ok

How much setback have you run and how has the hull reacted?
Your doing 20" setback 25" motors right? What did you have on the Sonic's same?
Curious how much difference in weight and cg between the io and outboard, gas tanks etc..and you just extended your gas how much

25” motors on both boats.
20” set back on Sonic 1 but also tried 6” jack plates.
Boat flew like a dream both ways.
Sonic 2 had 24” set back but flew similar.
Convincor will get float test as soon as able.
Ill fill tank w/water and leave batteries loose to experiment w/location and see how close I can get w/o doing more.

Yes those are 20"...another 5 inches way to high for me
But 5"(15/16) smaller is possible IF I was real careful coming off plane..
And with the jackplates now fixes the 2 draw big backs with them mounted at that height take off and powerheads in the water ...now 2 1/2" below and 2 1/2" above.

Sonic 1 at speed.
It flew way better and was 10 mphs faster than #2 and never figured out why.
Follow the lifting strikes and transom lines and there’s no bottom in the water.
That boat came w/20” motors and they drowned coming off/on plane.

Damn it I uploaded the wrong pic...this one gives me a headache.
When I was putting on the jackplates dropping the aluminum plates setting it up etc.
Only way For me to move and pick everything up I had scaffolding setup with a chain hoist. Had a bitch of a time moving around and trying to measure. So I gave up and just went by the holes that were in it. Bad move
After pulling the scaffolding out of the way I realized the holes they had drilled in the aluminum weren't the same.
Well it took me awhile to figure out what was off because some how nothing measured 3/4" off.
Finally just took it all off and fixed it. It was the holes in the 1/2" plate I couldn't see.

Evinrude 97 blocks on 88 mids
Closed deck loopers heavily ported
James Perry did all machining blocks and pistons
I put them together etc.
- Balanced rods,pistons
-88-92 cranks for 88 mids
_ 2.7 heads .675
_Decks milled
_150 psi comp 146 w thick gaskets (going to run the thicker and 146 psi)
_No idle reliefs(sleeves in opposite)
_No airboxes..(stacks working on and/or looking for)
_ Rejetted for no airboxes, 2.7 heads and comp
76 top 77 on bottom ....looking for newer sets of carbs...
_106 pullovers(actually made out of old jets)
_Water tells drilled at top of blocks
_Exhaust is drilled in lower unit and opened up a bit in the back.
_Cleaned all the intakes of slag etc
_ Stuffed intakes, main bearing bolts etc
_Boyeseen Reed's
_Vertex pistons(milled, finger ported to match )
_ CDI Digital 8500rpm ignition
Stators
Power packs
Timing bases
Rectifier regulators
Harnesses
_Aluminum Fuel rails
_Made low resistance plug wires (280 resistance) ..cheaper than buying them
_Low water pickup nose cones

Was thinking id be able to do something with the motor but crank Journals and bearings all down there were scored and some other stuff trying to get those pics to load.
Think I told you it happened right after I got all the New stuff on and didn't even get 4-5 hours of running before that happened.. last year just before i was able to start the new powerheads

Hopefully one of the winter projects..
Only problem is trying to find another looper mid have one..want to keep my others for now.
More the fact that I have to have a few back surgeries and can't take mine apart(myself) at least till after recovery but that's 6 months+ after surgery...can still work on them but no heavy lifting so wanted to have them done and ready and get someone to do the lifting early spring..:D
And just depends on budget will have to see..but Hey Santa..
Pics are of newer mids those are 97+-(actually same as powerheads)
But I have solid mounts in my '88s and the mounts are different..and not buying new mounts
So I'm using the 88-92 ones......
Couple other things but have to see...
