Hi everyone. Just bought a new to me 1999 31 fountain sport fish with 1999 225 optimax's with 1100 hours. The boat has clearly been maintained through the nose. Assuming the engines have been maintained well what type of service should I expect from these motors. I do understand a 20 year old outboard is a gamble and I do plan on repower sooner then later. Thanks for any input!!!

Welcome aboard! First off, very nice purchase. Second, those optis will give you another 1000hrs + easily as long as you keep up with the 100hr services , waterpumps, and run good oil through the compressor. I'm also assuming the air/fuel compressor was upgraded already....otherwise we probably wouldn't be seeing more than a pair of paperweights on the transom

Thanks and yes the compressors were upgraded. That's the first thing I asked. Im reading that if they have lasted this long then they were more then likely a solid set of motors. I hear these motors like to run and are a good hp/weight combo. We shall see. If the right pair of 300's were to come along i wouldn't hesitate!
Welcome to the site. I could tie my two boats together end to end and they wouldn't be that long. Looks like a great fishin boat.

Great looking boat.... like you said, 20 year old motors but if they have been maintained properly, you should get some time out of them.... maybe in a few years when the new Merc V-8 300's have the bugs worked out of them you can upgrade ( I hear the Suzuki's are actually a decent fish motor ). I'd run those into the ground (or sea) before considering replacing them. They are probably the most under-rated motors around and it's a shame Mercury stopped making them.

You could have gone with a lighter boat though LOL

Thanks for the response. I was hoping id get this type of feedback on the motors. Any tips on keeping the motors happy? Like fuel additive's or anything of the sorts?

Stick with the Mercury DFI oil, maintain regularly: Water pumps, thermostats, poppet valves, gear oil, filters (don't forget the compressor air filters and oil filters) alcohol-free gas, plugs about every 5 years and keeping moisture off the engines. I like mixing 2 stroke oil with CRC 656 and putting it in a spray bottle and soaking the powerheads with it.... 2004 engines and almost no rust in the Florida Keys..... Injectors should be serviced (all 12 per engine) if they have not already been done. Not cheap, but cheap insurance. Then of course the obvious such as regular inspection of the steering system, mounting bolts, cracks in props etc...... not saying those are problem areas, but better to catch it before you go out and find the problem 20 miles offshore............
NICE PAIR

You and me both! I'm at 27.5' tied end to end.
To the original poster - Nice looking ride! Have fun with it! What'd you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?
Just my opinion, but the trailer looks very under-sized. The front doesn't look like it will stop the boat if you jacked on the brakes either. May want to look into that. But welcome to scream and fly!
