View Full Version : Busy year! Starting my 3rd 25 Liberator

WILDMAN

This year has been crazy with building and selling boats! I've put together, painted, and rigged three 25's, three 21's, and one 22 Liberator so far. That's pretty good for me since I do everything by myself. I am now officially a senior citizen as of last week (65) so I don't move as fast. I got it off the trailer and on the cradle today. Bare hull with tanks is 1847 lbs. Boat is all composite except for the running surface which is balsa cored. Also has the center pod which eliminates any hop or porpoise. This 25 will get all the cool stuff that my green 25 got earlier this year. Fully capped front and rear with my custom back end added. I'll have my Russian fiberglass guy help me with the glass work. I'll cut and fit everything and he will glass it in. He is faster and knows more about laying glass up for strength. This boat is not pre-sold, so colors and motor choices are still open. Here's a few pics.

Randy. I think you may sleep less then President Trump. I am not in that boat market on my Burger King pay checks. But twin 4.6 v-8 mercury's. Some Red, Orange and Yellow over mostly white hull would be great. You sell it early next year. Buyer grows into bigger boat needs in 3 years. Second buyer gets it and loves it. After 5 years he goes thru a lifestyle change and has to sell it. Perfect time for me see it come available in 2026 when i get my Burger King retirement buyout package. I buy it and boat off into my wonder years.

Something like this would be nice. I think this basic theme would be great in 2026 when it gets into my garage.

There are very few guys out there that work as consistent as Randy does. Especially for someone who doesn't need to work at all-he's still a machine.

I've been cutting out panels for the rear of the boat. Floor panel for storage, bulkheads, knees, etc. 3rd pic shows a base plate inside a hatch to screw the bilge pump to. Last pic is a side bulkhead brace. All parts are composite

We got the entire rear end all glassed in. I have the four knees fitted now. They will get glassed in next along with the sponson stringers.

Back to working on the 25 again. Got alot of the rear compartment set up and ready to glass in. Also got the front all capped and starting the body work. after glassing the front, I wrapped it with foam which I sliced to creat a more curved radius. After filling it, you can see my glass guy covering it again with another layer of glass.

Finally finished all the glass and bodywork. Blocked out the front and rear. Ready for paint. I also spent most of the day grinding and sanding the rear area, getting it ready for Awlgrip and Sea-Dek flooring. Gotta make it slick! This is absolutly the worst part of working on boats GRINDING!
This boat is not sold yet, so if someone wants to pick the paintjob, call soon!

I finally got the complete interior framework done and fitted. The rear hatch and rear seat are composite. The backing for the side combings and front bulkhead are PVC board. The upholstery will be started after the New Year. Paint will also start then. I may have it sold, so I'm waiting for the OK, then he will come over and pick his paint and colors. The interior needs to match the colors.

Starting the paintjob this week.

WILDMAN

Been taping for the last 3 days. Here's some pics. The paper templates are made once I get on side done. That way I can get the other side symetrical. Lots of measuring and retaping.

WILDMAN

After taping all week, I got the first color on today. After I untape the black, I'll re-tape and start the orange pearl fades.

3M should give you a discount on tape!!!

WILDMAN
01-21-2019, 04:43 PM
I know! I'll use about $450 just in tape on this boat. The "Fineline" tape is $17-$21 a roll.

WILDMAN

I spent the day taping the back end of the 25. This area will also be black

I painted the orange pearl today. I used three different shades of House of Kolor Shimrin pearls and did a fade. Kind of hard to see the fade until it is cleared and in the sun.

How do you reach the center of the deck to spray it?

I spraying it right now. I'm between coats. I have to get up in the boat and climb up on the dash to paint part of it, then I can reach the rest of it from the ground. Late night tonight!

Awesome. How many coats of clear do you put on it?

WILDMAN
01-25-2019, 11:02 PM
Three coats, then sand flat so you can't feel the graphics, then 2 more coats, then sand and buff 3 times.

Awesome. How many coats of clear do you put on it?

Is that awlgrip hard to sand/buff?

Beak Boater
01-26-2019, 09:22 AM
AT least you have cooler weather to finish sand the paint. That's a lot of work especially if its 85 degrees and high humidity. Looking good.

WILDMAN
01-26-2019, 12:02 PM
I only use Awlgrip in the rear storage area. Yes, It's very hard to sand and buff

I finally ran the 38" Hill 5 blade cleavers today. Was pretty windy, but still ran 116 at 6250 rpm. I think I'll stay with the 36's. They still run 114-115 and accelerate better.
