They are definitely cool boats, my uncle is out in Copiague with his carlson. Can't remember the year but he's got an inline 150 hangin off the back. Next time I talk to him I'll ask what speeds he seeing.

More, more, more. Tell me more, do you have pictures of the recore??? What does the interior look like, how much did you change???? Currently have a Carlson Contender (fourteen and a half foot) for sale on ebay, going to redo it if it doesn't sell. What did you do with the transom?? How did you handle the backbone down the center???? What kind of primer did you use, flip it over and do the bottom too??? Needs lots of pictures. Thanks Oh, yeah, how did it run with the 60 horse on it??

I’ll get some pics of the recore, i’m no boat builder but i used quality materials and went after it. The backbone isnt’t in yet, the boat is stone cold raw with two bucket seats on a box similar to original and that with the west system and heavy glass made it fine with the 60 which ran 40 with a hustler aliminum prop on tje transom at tje top hole. Was gonna spring for a few props but had this 150 and a few propellers. It loves negative trim with the 60 , thats when it ran the fastest. Inwould imagine it’s going to be a totally different rig now, not using jackplate yet.

THATS wishfull thinkin with a150 had both challenger & contenter. 16 was a little faster. with a 110 merc, 2 blade about 55 mph. make sure u have the factory skeg on bottom. a aluminum channel works well for backbone 3/8 ss carrage thru bolted face down. with 2 110bp ss l/u the challenger did 83. dead level trim seemed best. mine was gold flake killer interior, they are prettyand built well.

I have a 72 CV16...150 Johnson...I keep a 19" prop on it for skiing..4" setback jack plate...when it hits the rev limiter it's running low 60s..I used to play around with motor heights, props ,etc....but a good 150 will just out run the hull...mine has a round bath tub bottom with no strakes at all..even set up for skiing the trim has to be set almost neutral..negative trim sends it on to right side ...positive sends it to the left...bigger prop and some rpms sends it into the woods if you ain't careful..mine is small and easy to push but nothing there to hold it straight when it gets up to speed and unwets the hull..they are very cool boats and good rides up to the speeds they were built for ...

I had a 71 with a 73 135 Johnson. Balsa cored the bottom to get the flex out and it was a different boat. Bow up and no porpoising.

So, you did replace the transom, why the cut at the splash well, are the top and bottom glued together, wouldn't come apart??? The backbone I was talking about is the u shaped channel running front to back on the floor. Seeing what a pain the transom is, I an really thinking seriously of a sea cast transom repair on mine.

Yea, the boat is glassed together top and bottom removing the rear cap was a piece of cake . Gave fantastic access. My boat is a 67, the original stringer was a piece resembling 1x4. It ran front to back. The extra money spent im west system was well worth it for the lack of toxic fumes

yes i came up thru bottom, seats to transom, bolts about 18'' 0/c is your stringer gone? if so they used a 2x4 glassed in of course i work with aluminum but a nice 2x4 would work. recess nuts/ washers inside on top, glass over. does your hull have 2 little wedges on bottom at transom? PORT and starboard. a lot of people grind them off. they are supposed to cut surface tension on smooth water. baby tabs. mine was a 68 i think stringer was positively 2'' thick maybe a 2x3 i know i snapped it! trying to catch a GW INVADER. USE some 5200 under stringer/ bolts 5/16 would be good. also i believe its dead flat.

Yea bud, i went with the 2x 4 and west system and it tightened the boat up. I do have the wedges, was contemplating temp gluing some bigger longer wedges to simulate a full tunnel

Update, 60 mph with motor on transom and 23 inch pitch prop, 5700rpm. I decided to go with a newer mid from a promax to tighten her up on the rear, gets hairy with the rear steering from old worn mounts

I think im going to make a flat plate to raise the motor more , i have a 6 and 10 inch plates on hand but dont think setback will be good for it, the boat porpoises at anything between 20 and 45, needs more negative trim i think. So im going to make something up. I do enjoy its current setup for drag racing and propstands
