I have a 1998 that later became the factory prototype for a shift shaft seal retrofit. I'm looking for a service manual and wanted to know if there is much difference between 1997 and 1998 motors, aside from something like that.
Thanks in advance.
The factory never really did anything about their 3.0L gearcase issue's . However you can give Todd D. a call , he stocks all the parts (and tech info ) you'll need .

https://madefi.com/Mercury certainly made a change on the Sportmaster after the shift shaft seal on my 1998 kept being blown upwards resulting in water in the case and subsequent corrosion of the shaft. After multiple replacements of said seal, both while under warranty and post-warranty, I, personally, was put in touch with the "office of the president" at Mercury. After their "investigation", Mercury confirmed that the then-current seal that was pressure-fit could not withstand the pressure of the gear case itself. They asked us to tap two holes in the case, which scared me to death at the time I might add, and try a new style of seal they sent, along with a new shift shaft, that was designed to be secured with two bolts. That did the trick, and I had no problems with the case for literally 20 years and 2 months on my bass boat, which sees a lot of starts and stops in fresh and brackish water. From that point on, that new seal was used in production. Of course, every time I was scheduled to change that seal for maintenence, I always end up being sent the older style seal because my year and motor serial number calls for the old seal, and I end up having to speak to someone about it and give my gear case serial number to them to get the right seal, but that's a small price to pay for Mercury Racing addressing the issue and subsequently making the Sportmaster a darned strong and dependable case. At least mine has been.
The case was just completely rebuilt for the first time in over 20 years, so I don't currently need parts. I just want to have a service manual on hand, hence my original question. If the motors are pretty much the same, it widens my options in trying to locate a service manual.
I take it you didn't look ... :nonod:
So I went back and read your original post .
I have a 1998 that later became the factory prototype
My apologies sir , i had no idea of the scope of character I was dealing with here ... :D
The non-prototypical bomb proof case's ( I do know guys who can still break em ) have "four seals" on the drive shaft , "two seals" on the shift shaft , "three seals" on the bearing carrier , and all are blue billet pieces .
Most guys fill em up , drain a couple oz out , put the screw back in and that works for them .
Me being a fruitcake , even though I'm not from the land of fruits and nut jobs , I like to run the fluid level to just below the hole where the speedo line would normally go , that way the driveshaft bearings are submerged . After I run tha *^$%$^&** *^%^&*(( wide open for 20 miles and you can cook bacon on the case , the fluid comes up to the little sharpie line if all is well .... ;)

And just so no lil buggie-boo's try to crawl halfway down the line and commit suicide , I dropped this air tool muffler over the end of the hose ...

I looked and looked thru out my 2005 / 300x manual ... All I can find is yesterdays news ... :p
But .. here is a good parts look up .. pick a year , model ... gives superseded # 's etc ...

I take it you didn't look ... :nonod:If you mean I didn't look at MADEFI.COM, I sure did, and what immediately caught my eye was the billet shift shaft carrier. The holes for the bolts that hold that carrier are what got tapped into my case. Once I saw that, I became a little more relieved that there are more parts options for me, at least for now. But, I also know that my motor is 20 years old, and I really should have a service manual of some sort on hand, because it's probably going to get harder as time goes on, to get parts, information, etc. on a 1998 Promax 300, you know what I mean? I can get my hands on a 1997 Promax 300/Magnum 3.0L manual right now, so if it's close to my 1998 I will get it, hence my question. If you, or anyone you know, might know if there is much difference between the 1997 and 1998 models, I'd sure like to hear it. To be clear, if there's only slight difference, maybe I should get the 1997 manual for now, just to have something until I can find on for a 1998, you know what I mean?
All kidding aside , they are so close in my opinion that I lump them in :
early model : carb and efi , slice of bread computer(s) on the back , V-belt , etc .
Late model : Motorola , serpentine belt , large stainless thermostats , vessel view
Opti : DFI , good gas milage , short powerhead studs
2018 : no mas
When looking for parts , I think you will find that by ordering from a serial # range rather that year will be more accurate .
I gotta ask ... :D Did you find the seal's part number ?

Mr. Bassanova ,
Thank you for your extreme patience with me .
Yes , I noticed in the title you were looking for a service manual . However in text, it appeared you were looking for information that would have only come out in a subsequent technical bulletin that even if you are instrumental in its development and application , are not privy to receiving unless you are part of the dealer network.
Instead, I chose to bring you up to speed on what the aftermarket has done in technical advancements involving the 3.0L / 3.2L case.
Still you asked for a manual .
I gave you a generalized grouping of the 3.0L family , which for the most part have a wide spectrum of parts interchangeability and where to look for your particular engine and how it would be better to use a serial number when ordering parts rather than a year model .
You said you don't want part's, you want a manual ... wait for it :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Know your model and serial # all manuals will be listed under parts look-up ;)

If you can't find one ... you have enough "friends" here that will get you info if need be . ( most need ohm readings for stator , coils , sensors , tps setting , etc )

Chaz, don't get me wrong. You have been most helpful. It's obvious you have experience finding what you need amidst the sea of "so much information out there, you can't tell what's what".
From my limited experience, there are so many bad-a$$ motorheads on this forum to be respected, and I have no doubt I will get the answers I need, when i need them, but I'm just a bass fisherman with a fast boat, and right now I am looking for a manual mostly for procedures, not the latest details. This way I don't have to trouble people like you for basic stuff like torque sequences, general maintenance items, and such. That said, I would definitely check in with this forum when it comes to some things that have advanced since the manual was published. Something that comes to mind in this regard, for example, is lower end gear oil. So, I don't expect a manual to be the answer to everything, just something to reference here and there.

With aprox 7300 days in the books since your motor was new . Do you think you would buy a Mercury factory manual @
A) McDonalds
B) Taco Viva
C) Authorized Mercury dealer
D) N.W.Ch. Clinton Foundation Headquarters
Now that I see who I'm dealing with , in the future ... instead of saying , turn right at this first light and the library is on the left , you cant miss it .
I'll be sure to answer you , just as you asked . It's three miles this side of the old wooden bridge . Of course, I might mumble under my breath, that bridge burned down bout 20 years ago .... ;)

Chaz, I am now taking you up on your offer to supply information. :D
Would you mind sharing more details on what I assume is a vent you have created? For example:
Is that simply a hose you have running out of the case, or is that hose connected to some kind of reservoir? Did you modify the case somehow to accommodate said hose/reservoir?
