Considering a 2005 2.5xs. I've done some reading, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there. What i've gathered is it's an opti 2.5 on a 3.0 mid, 230-240-ish horsepower depending on what you read, 6800 redline, sporty 1.87, etc.

What I can't find is any information on common problems, reliability, etc. Any reason why I should NOT buy this motor? I understand it was a 1 and done deal, so it's a bit of a unicorn, but by all accounts it seems to be a decent motor give the original 2.5's had been discontinued. Anyone have or running one now?

I am no expert but from what I have gathered the 2.5XS is a fine motor but was afflicted by the 3.0 litre mid section. Us guys with light boats did not care for it's overall heavier weight and guys with Heavier boats wanted larger displacement motors. Had it been offered with the 2.5 Mid it may have been more successful but if it will work for you go for it.

The 3L gearcase holds up well to the power, but only run premium fuel in it, nothing less.

Mike Rakes just sold one on his allison SS. Great motor from everything he has said about it.

I had one on an STV Euro and loved it, pulled all the way to limiter with a 32 ET. No issues at all and sipped fuel. I would buy another if I could find one.

Great engine.

Only real downside is the leakage problems with the 3liter Sportmaster.

If the 280 hadn’t been around at the same time, it would probably have sold better.

.
Is this similar to the torquemaster seal problem? I can't recall exact parts since it's been over a decade, but I bought a seal upgrade for a torquemaster for $150 or so back in 2008 time frame. Similar deal?
