Is the large U shaped anode on the bottom of the merc clamp brackets necessary? What are the problems if one is left off.
thanks Carter

In fresh water its no big deal. Salt water? Different story. You'll want a sacrificial anode for salt water use.
If you're needing one, get in touch with rickracer or RL.

My poor force looked ok, but the LU was pitted real bad. No paint sticking anywhere, and no anode. Drain plug stuck in this '83 motor and had to drill it out, stupid setscrew thing. No salt around here, but I bet he left it in the water all summer every year. So I think I'll take my old trashed Merc anode and bolt it someplace on the clamp to be safe -so I can keep the 6 coats of car paint in it;) I only leave it in over weekends, but it could not hurt.
