Vking YT, 6” setback, 175 Merc. currently running a 28 small ear chopper. I want to go with a 28 big ear but finding it difficult to find one. Would a 30 big ear be too much? Best of 83 so far, but only saw that once and I don’t remember what rpms it was running.

Without knowing you're RPM at WOT, it is difficult to for people to give advice.:)

It’s been a while but I think I was around 6500 rpm.

I always used a cleaver when I had a YT, that hull can use the tail lift. I was running a 260 with a Merc 30P cleaver, maybe a 28P cleaver would work with a 175??

Maybe that’s the way to go. I don’t run a lot of trim at speed since it likes to hang the bow really high, I’m probably almost neutral on the trim. The cleaver with a little trim might be the way to go. Now I need to find a cheap one to see what happens, which is proving difficult!

I've always found that 10" to 12" of set back really works on YT's but you would probably have to replace the shorter Ride-Guide cable with a longer one. With more set back and a cleaver it should run with a little less bowlift on top end.

So after going out with a buddy a couple weeks ago I don't think a Cleaver would work. With both our less than slim bodies on board I could not get the bow to come up enough to fly nice. Fortunately, I have finally come across a real nice 28 big ear chopper and HOPE this sis going to help my cause.
I hope with the larger diameter of the big ear over my small it will work some magic.

It’s been too long for an update. The 28 big ear and Bobs nosecone was good for 86.2 mph last season with 2 on board and the same tired 175 Merc that had 105lbs max per cylinder when I checked about alot of years ago. Also good for a solid **** eatin’ grin on this guys face.

Try a Mazco RE 3,I bet there is more in it.Not the same boat but my 21 Daytona picked up 11mph going from a 28 Merc big ear chopper to a Mazco RE3 in 29518440
