I’m somewhat surprised no one has mentioned this yet. Very sad day.

Damn that sucks. They just built all new boats for this year. Each boat is carbon fiber now and weigh 600 lbs less than previous hulls and the 300 merc power raised speeds into the 70's. I actually like watching these races now. Sorry to hear this :(

The boats are not completely new. They built new hulls and stringer grids. the decks are the same decks as before.

Said all new boats this year made from carbon fiber (they might have said new hulls) but they didn't give much details. Either way 600 lbs less and more power I thought was a good thing. So sad this accident happen'd :(

so they went from dangerous to more dangerous? ? Its boat racing. Racing anything can be dangerous. So what are your thoughts on IHBA drag racing,Champ boats/F1,jet sprints, high power offshore boats and X Cat's etc? These P1 boats are probably the slowest boats in boat racing. Accidents happen. These guys racing would not do it if the danger level was off that charts.

I agree to a point, but this particular hull is inherently dangerous. There is at least one or two rollovers or serious hooks in each event. They handle like crap and are super narrow. Even though they are only 70 mph boats, they do seem to have a lot of accidents. Believe a few people have now died over the years between the UK and US series.
They did build all new boats this year, all carbon, but yes, same design.

Those are some serious steps for such a short boat.

the fact that they lease these boats out to roocky drivers with little experience is a big concern with other drivers and teams...

if they changed to bottom's and left the tops the same weight would further enhance the problem, too top heavy. these races are on flat water by offshore standards and with tight turns and limited hp their going to get bunched up. sad but true, receipt for disasaster.funout
The last thing you want to do is make hard sharp turns with a stepped V
20 years ago a friend that lives on the Niagara river, said a fellow was test driving a 30 some foot well known brand V stepped hull , made a sharp turn to test what he heard can happen and it did .
I don't blame the driver

race a stepped hull or eat a tide pod?
Bernico F2 would be a good choice.
