After firing up and running 20 miles down river, my boys pulled up to the courtesy dock and turned engine off to hear the starter motor free spinning. They switched the Perko off to stop it. Starter motor was smoking hot to no surprise and would not crank. Pull started to get to trailer.
Back home and starter cranks fine, but solenoid sticks closed to stay cranking. Key switch was suspected. Replaced solenoid and bypassed key switch with push button. Basically battery power to push button switch, then to S terminal of solenoid. Even with push button switch (its own circuit), the solenoid stuck after energizing and kept sending power to starter. The other small terminal "I" terminal has a small ground wire to it which is correct. The wiring diagram shows a ground wire to one of the solenoid mounting bolts. It did not have this.
So, here is my question after all of that.
If this solenoid's case was not grounded through a mounting bolt, could it possibly not internally disengage?

Thanks, Mark
